‘American Idol’ recap: Hollywood round with 29 out of 30 picked

By Rodney Ho

AMERICAN IDOL XIII: Contestants hear if they move on to the next round in the all-new "Hollywood"episode of AMERICAN IDOL XIII airing Wednesday, Feb. 12 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. CR: FOX. Copyright 2014 FOX BROADCASTING.

AMERICAN IDOL XIII: Contestants hear if they move on to the next round in the all-new “Hollywood”episode of AMERICAN IDOL XIII airing Wednesday, Feb. 12 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. CR: FOX. Copyright 2014 FOX BROADCASTING.

The top 29 are picked, with 12 more on top of the 17 last week.

There didn’t appear to be any terribly weak picks tonight that I could tell and they even highlighted a decent singer (Savion Wright) who didn’t make the cut.

It’s hard for me to pinpoint who among these singers are gimmes for the top 13. Maybe C.J. Harris, Brandy Neely and Majesty Rose? The rocker dude Caleb Johnson may have an advantage of being the only rocker dude.

“Idol” will have the women sing on Tuesday, the men on Wednesday and the results on Thursday. There will be a vocal workshop with Randy Jackson, Adam Lambert and Chris Daughtry. Not everyone will get to sing. The top 5 ladies and guys will be picked by our vote. Three more will be selected by each of the judges.

We’ll start the top 13 live shows the week after.

I apologize but it appears Livefyre commenting malfunctioned for much of the hour we were supposed to be live blogging. I didn’t even know it had come back to life until after 9 p.m.

We return to Casey Thrasher and C.J. Harris. Who will make the top 31? They tell Casey first. C.J. looks dejected. But good news! They are both IN.

Marrialle Sellars, who lost her dad, doesn’t have the best voice but she seems to have a big heart. HCJ says she has been inconsistent, which has hurt her shot at making it this far. But she makes it IN. “I forgot how to breathe,” she says.

Jena (pronounced Geena) Asciutto brings that emotive singer-songwriter thing that is hot now. HJC considers her the “sleeper” and she’s IN.”

Caleb Johnson from Asheville, N.C. is getting the type of edit that screams IN. He is a rocker, big and loud. And not in a bad way.  HCJ thinks it’s too much of a character and Keith Urban says “Rock of Ages.” “Are you relevant today,” HCJ said. “Do you belong in this competition?” He says yes. Ultimately, he’s IN, despite the fact the edit made it seem he wasn’t.

Ethan Harris has a little Clay Aiken-ish quality to his voice and vibe. “He’s an interesting cat,” HCJ said to J. Lo during the solo round. And he gets the IN.

Nalani Quintello, Sarina Joi Crowe, and David Oliver Willis are cut.

Majesty Rose York? She had some trouble with her lyrics but she has a lot of potential and the judges lover her enough to put through. A solid IN.

Briston Maroney. The 15 year old has a very young feel and young voice but a unique sound. I’m not sure he’s ready but he might get votes if given the shot. And the judges put him through. He’s very IN.

Brandy Neelly and Brianna Oakley go together and after struggling with the elevators, meet the judges. Brandy  has a little bit of that Carrie/Kellie combo vibe. She is surely IN. Brianna is very pop/R&B and hits a killer note in her solo. Keith pulls the feint and acts like he’s not going to put them in but they both are IN.

Kenzie Hall uses strange pronunciation and little vocal tricks to work the cuteness level to an nth degree. But it works for now and she’s IN the top 31.

Savion Wright said he wanted to be an original. “I thought I showed you who I was as a person,” he said. HCJ thought his solo original in Hollywood was “flat.” He is OUT.

Sandie Lee from Missouri was the one of the final two girls with Austin Wolfe from Park City, Utah. Only one could go through. I have no idea who would be picked but Sandie is OUT and Austin is the final girl IN the top 50.

Ben Briley of Tennessee and Atlanta’s Neco Starr are the last guys remaining. In a twist, they decide to leave it up to the public. Ben is having to battle Dexter Roberts and Casey Thrasher for the male country vote. Neco was already on the fence. He had to sing in the hangar just to make it to the hotel. There are other male R&B singers he’s battling with, especially Malcolm Allen. Is he as good? He had some throat issues before his solo round but he sounded passable doing “Halo.”

Putting through 15 to then only allow 10 to sing is rotten in my opinion. For all the changes Idol made, they still like the gimmicks.

Pre-performance voting has never made sense to me. Especially this week and the next one or two - when you don't really know anything about them or how good they actually sing, not having even seen anything from some of them. It's a definite plus for the ones they featured in the prelims - some people may have, unfortunately, "liked" a particular one and will just auto-vote for that person.

I'm not sure that voting before anyone has sung is smart but, considering that everyone is now limited to how many times they can vote(I'm reading 50 times on a phone, 50 times text votes and 50 times allowed for each contestant on the supervote(made through Facebook or a phone app).  And considering we have until 10am the following morning, we can take our time getting all the votes in.

The voting plans for Idol this year are strange.  Here's a quote from an Idol producer:

"We're going to start the voting at the top of the show," Blankens said. "I don't know if that's [been made] official, but I said it. Wednesdays at 8 o’clock, you can vote. You don’t have to wait until after the show. Till 10 a.m. the next morning.”

Voting limits on all platforms will be in place for the first time in American Idol history. 50 votes each for landline/cell phone, text and Facebook/Phoneapp supervote (50 vote limit for EACH CONTESTANT via supervote).

And, here's a thought....will the judges base their opinions on talent alone or will genre variation also be a factor?

Very much looking forward to hearing the girls sing tonight and seeing how Randy, Adam and Chris run the bootcamp.  Should be fun rather than boring...let's hope it is.

Not sure how the judges are going to pick 5 girls to eliminate, never mind how we're going to pick 5 girls to vote for.  They all seem pretty talented to me.

Should have scrolled down and seen everybody else's reminders about THREE IDOL NIGHTS this week.

I',m in!

Couldn't sign in yesterday.

Hope everybody knows we have THREE Idol nights this week, starting today.

Will be interesting to see how Randy "Dawg" Jackson, Chris, and Adam work with the remaining contestants.  Hopefully their input will ease some nerves and give confidence to those that need it.

Sam-A-1, I kinda like 3 nights of IDOL.  I just have to record most of it to watch when I get home.

Sam, post on Rodney's WD thread.  There was so much that surprised me about this past episode.

Deirdre: Watched "WD" and WOW & YEAH! To not ruin it for Mercedes, I KNOW you know what my "yeah" is all about - I'm happy now. Wondering who........(hope you understand) and good or bad? Can't wait for next week, and now I'll read RoHo's recap.

I don't like the 3-night part of the season - hope it's over this week, and we have a nice group. I wish they'd never started the X# of boys vs X# of girls thing. The first few years it was simply the best top 10 or 12 singers, and I liked that much better. 3 nights is too much for me.

DeirdreC
DeirdreC

And just as a reminder:  The girls sing TONIGHT.  The boys sing tomorrow night and the top 10 or 12 or whatever they're doing this year will be announced on Thursday night.

Morning!

Here's an excellent article from mjsbigblog detailing what we can expect on Idol this week:

http://www.mjsbigblog.com/american-idol-xiii-boot-camp-photos-feat-adam-lambert-chris-daughtry.htm

A few highlights:

1.Randy Jackson begins what he calls "bootcamp" teaching the singers what being on a major tv show is all about and helping them with all that it entails.  Helping him with this will be former Idols Chris Daughtry and Adam Lambert.

2. We will hear who won the audience vote.

3. Only 10 girls and 10 guys will sing for us.  The judges will have already eliminated 5 from each group.

Just got back from luch and YEAH! Our Ice Dance team won gold - can't wait to get home and see the performance. Huge score earned.

D: Guess "WD" is pretty darned good! I can't wait to see it - hope we find out about the others, especially  Glenn and Maggie! Hope I can get to it tonight, gotta see the dance stuff, but I won't watch all of it.

Just watched WD.  Sam, watch as soon as you can!

Happy to hear from you Wp!  Yes, I think we have all had just about enough of winter.

Sam, I loved all the humor in last night's DA episode.  It lightened what has been a pretty unhappy season so far.

Idol's ratings fell a lot last week because of the Olympics.  When even a top rated show like Big Bang Theory won't run new episodes against the games, is it any wonder that Idol has a problem with it?

Sam-A1
Sam-A1

Deirdre: Another "DA" SPOILER ALERT:  I too am worried about Mr. Bates, but I'm really sure all will be ok in the end! Now, Edith.......-  loved when "Granny" had the talk with her. And the very last scene - the three ladies heads turning in unison - loved it.

END of Spoiler alert.

And I too was tempted to read about last night's "WD" - but will NOT give in. It will probably be tomorrow before I see it - I've set up the DVR to tape today's finals in Ice Dancing - and will run thru that, rather than trying to catch the ones I'm really interested in tonight, and possibly missing them (new Castle tonight - not missing that!)

Mercedes: What did you think of the young Russian pair, she with the pale pink dress and the rhinestone headpiece around her forehead? They were not great on techs and the program a bit bland, but she was a really beautiful girl - I think they'll be great in the future - still pretty young.

Beautiful weekend was it not?  Almost all the ice/snow has melted.  Now a little more sunshine to dry up all the mud. JT maybe we will send you some of the snow/ice we had last week.  Think we have had enough.

Morning!

SPOILER ALERT:  We watched Downton last night and now worry about Mr Bates.  Without giving anything away...what if Anna and Lady Mary are wrong?

Have not seen WD yet but have been sorely tempted to read Rodney's recap.  I must see the show this afternoon.

We haven't heard from our friend Woodpappy since the storm.  Hoping his electric is back by now.

Oh, and while we felt no earthquake in Uptown Atlanta, we saw a streak of Sandhill cranes fly over the house. Thousands! Best sign of Spring yet.

MercedesS
MercedesS

Good morning! Take it s a good sign for the week that I managed to  - sign in.

Still haven't watched any of the two new WD. Or last two DA s. ( Show has lost its luster, now down to cheap soap. We're losing interest. ) In my house, it's all Olympics, all the time. Seems Americans are so hyped up about Gold or Nothing! that they lose everything. I think t's a great honor to win Silver and Bronze too. The two American  Ice Dancers are unbelievable.   Nervous about our little Gold skater though!

Sam-A1
Sam-A1

They're saying on the news that the earthquake was felt all over GA, to ALA and up to TN - since I sit right in the heart of Cobb, blocks from 75, I don't understand how the shocks got up to TN without going right thru my neighborhoode! Never felt a thing.

Been nice having some sun - not sure I want 70°+ in Mid-Feb, but better than all that snow and ice!

"Carl" from"WD" is making an appearance at the Marietta SQ tonight - WXIA is there giving away Olympics stuff and broadcasing during the 6:00 news. I'll pass.

Anyone see the US/Russia Hockey Game live yesterday morning? Wow - fancastic! The shootout was amazing (our guy was quite a hottie!). And our top Pairs Ice Dancing couple was amazing once again - scored the highest scores ever given for an Ice Dance routine - they are just gorgeous to watch.

DeirdreC
DeirdreC

Hoping that our friends on the east side of Georgia survived the storm, the power outages and now the earthquake.  I'm almost afraid to wonder what Mother Nature has planned for us next!

Final numbers for "Idol": 9.88 million 2.9/9 18-49. Worst numbers in overall viewers since top 8 results show in 2002, the one where Jim Verraros was eliminated. That 2.9 18-49? "Idol" went below that several times last year. The worst: 2.6.

Man... tough week. Was off Monday - Thursday. Worked today. I'm exhausted!!

Good thing I've got a three-day weekend to recover!

Have a great weekend everyone.

Deirdre and Mercedes: (M -only  if you've watched "WD" - YIK ES - it was really good. and I LOVED finding out about Michonne's background story! Did either of you see the article about the "10 most hated kids in tv"? "Carl" is the #1. I was getting really mad at him for awhile, but it was ok in the end. Loved the "102 ounces of pudding". However, I can't help but think all this packaged stuff (not cans) like cereal are really stale by now - oils in food go bad and taste and smell rank - I know that for a fact. And that sign "Please do what I couldn't" was really sad, as was Michonne finding Hershel's remains.

And "DA" was really good too - no shortage of fellas after Lady Mary. And glad she found out about Anna - just wish she'd been told who it was, so she could do something about it. Bates knows, for sure - I don't want to see him back in jail! I can't imagine where the story with the Lord going via ship to America is going to - hope he doesn't come back with a husband aimed for Mary.

I think the ratings will improve.  I think a lot of folks wait till they can have some input on the top 15-20.  Then it starts to really grab the interest.

Oh now I remember Jillian Jensen... the "I was bullied" girl from X-Fator.

Didn't get around to watching last night. But finally got around to watching the first night of cuts.

Jillian Jensen is one of the most wounded souls I've ever seen on a show like this. He AGT audition was one of the most emotional, heart wrenching performances ever.

Ratings keep sliding for "Idol," up against the Olympics. 11.7 mil on Wed, 10.2 million on Thurs. That 10.2 million last night has to be the lowest since season one.

I wonder if the folks at livefyre also designed HealthCare.Org? It doesn't work well either! Not being harsh just a little levity to lighten the mood. I do hope everyone has a wonderful Valentine's Day!

@Sam-A1  But still, with the votes limited, auto-voting will make no difference.  Doesn't matter how early you vote, you still only get 50 on each platform.

@DeirdreC "Pretty unhappy season so far" - you got that right.  Took hubby and me three watchings to get through the episode before the last two ones. . poor Edith, poor Anna.  Edith needs to go back to her writing. A bestseller would do her some good.

MercedesS

@Sam-A1 The Russian pair I'm interested in is the one that came second to the not-so-good Russian winners. Pairs skaters, not dancers.  I thought it was poor sportsmanship of the Russian semi-god Plushenko (sp?) who first forced his way onto the Russian Olympic team,  sidelining the Russian champion,  then decided, after a weak showing in the team competition,  that oops, his back hurt too much to skate in men's single competish, and as he left, half the audience (all Russian)  in the arena left with him. Boo.

@RodneyHo I don't put much stock into rating when they're going up against annual or semi-annual events like the Olympics, Super Bowl or World Series. Part albeit maybe only a small part of X-Factors problem were the fact they were preempted by the World Series every year. I think it does play a part. After the Olympics we should have a better idea of where Idol is compared to last year.

JTesla
JTesla

I'm surprised they didn't take a few weeks off for the Olympics. If some better sports were airing even I would have wathed the Olympics over Idol. Although I did record last night so I could fast forward to the Skeleton.

@DanJohn @RodneyHoI agree. I hope the numbers rebound once the live shows start next week, maybe to 12-13 million.
