Who is out first on ‘American Idol’ season 13?

Kristen O’Connor seemed like dead weight to me. I have no idea why they even let her in for the wild card. They should have kept either pretty boy Spencer Lloyd or Bria Anai, the R&B Lithonia teen.

And tonight proved me right. (I called it last night, though it was hardly a tough call.)

Kristen is a decent singer but offers nothing more than a pageant performance. She brings nothing interesting to the table – at all.

Malaya Watson (barely) survives another week. She certainly needs to calm down.

I also predicted yesterday Dexter Roberts being in the bottom but he wasn’t. It will be an all-female bottom three. Instead, it was MK Nobilette, who survived.

Safe: Ben, Alex, Jena, Dexter, Majesty, Sam, Caleb, Emily, CJ, Jessica

Bottom three: Malaya, MK, Kristen

UPDATE: Ratings last night were 9.8 million with a pitiful 2.3 18-49 rating, losing by wide margins to “The Big Bang Theory” and even “The Millers” at the 8:30 p.m. hour. In the 18-49 demo, “Two and a Half Men,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal” later that night beat “Idol.” So the show, even without the Olympics, saw no real bounce.

Randy Jackson’s comments. (He lacks that Jimmy Iovine edge but he’s adequate.)

Malaya Watson: “She didn’t quite calm down enough. The song got the best of her.”

Jena Irene: “She did a very good job getting that message across.”

Ben Briley: “It was way too fast. We slowed it down a bit to help him get the words. On the show, it was still a little too fast.”

Alex Preston: “I loved the subtleness of this performance. Great job, Alex.”

MK Nobilette: “We had moving. We made strides. She had a little makeover… She did really well last night.”

Sam Woolf “Very talented, very cool but very shy. He’s so good and talented. He needs his performance to match his talent. If he can, he’ll be money.”

Majesty Rose: “In rehearsal, don’t eat the words. Really enunciate. On the night, she was fantastic. She totally made the song her own.”

Dexter Roberts: “Hold the note at the end. Find spots to make it more your own. Dexter didn’t quite take all the advice. It wasn’t his best performance but it was good enough to keep him around.”

CJ Harris: “He needs to be consistent every week and not let the nerves get to him.”

Kristen O’Connor: “She gave a pretty good performance. They were pretty positive. Did she sound that expression and get the message across?”

Caleb Johnson: “He continues to show who he is. He’s the in-house rocker.”

Jessica Meuse: “It was amazing to hear her sing. She has this big voice. I want her to show the emotion. She commands your attention from jump. She’s so effortless.”

Emily Piriz:  “It’s a tough one to deliver. She did a beautiful performance but lacked a little bit of the Pink edge.”

And while I'm logged on, I should catch up on my Idol thoughts.  I didn't really watch auditions this year... I've never liked them... and I missed most of Hollywood, what with the Olympics being on.

So after watching "cold" on the very first week of live singing (the top 10 girls and top 10 guys) - I wasn't super impressed with anyone except Sam.  After hearing "Babylon", I had very high hopes for him... he seemed to be the whole package with a good voice too!  :-)   Though now I've seen many of y'all saying that he didn't do so well last Wednesday.  Out of the girls I liked Emily and MK pretty well, and Majesty Rose has potential.  (Remember, I'm a week behind... I've only gotten through the first three singers so far from last Wednesday.  After reading comments, I'm looking forward to Majesty, and is it Caleb many of y'all like?)

And one funny thought... does anyone else think Malaya looks EXACTLY like Ugly Betty?  (That's not meant to be a slam... that was the best show on TV for a long time, and Betty was one of the best characters!  I still miss Wilhelmina.)

Just posted a new Idol related blog entry...

Well, that was contradictory, wasn't it!  Don't tell me, but yet give me a hint.  Haha!  Hint if you can without ruining too, too much.  Otherwise I'll impatiently wait until I can watch tonight...

I'm here, Deirdre!  But I won't get to see last night's HIMYM until tonight, so don't tell me!  I promise I'll watch tonight.  Wow, now I'm nervous... I've really been enjoying the last few episodes.  Give me a very small hint about what's worrying you?

Sam, 'm looking forward to "Budapest"!

Mercedes: Know anything about the "Hotel Budapes" film yet? For me the previews look ridiculous, in a bad way, but it has a pretty good cast, and I just found out it's by the director of "Moonrise Kingdom", which I totally adored. So guess that'll be my weekend movie, if it starts Friday. Been two weeks without a movie - I'm dying!

Good - I want to know more about Darryl's rough and tumble look, but somewhat tender demeanor (when needed). And his relationship with that terrible (until the very end) brother of his.

I hope we have a few episodes left - hate the point when everything is off and we're stuck with dreck that couldn't make it to regular series status.

Fallen off the first "page"!  Good morning!

Sam, it isn't a wow but it is very good.  I like that they are pairing people who haven't really done much together in the past.  This week(no giving anything away) we are back with Darryl and Beth and get to know more about them.

Deirdre: I haven't watched "WD" yet - have you? If so, is it a "WOW" one like last week? Hope to get to it tonight.

Thought I was free and clear of "Dancing......Stars" this go-round - No "stars", or even hardly anyone I'd ever heard of, except the trash bimbo from "real" housewives of ATL - then at the very end of the new cast list, our spectacular ice dance pair, Charlie and Meryl - I feel just like Michael Corleone - "just when I think I'm out - they pull me back in"! I will watch until they're both out, but they actually should be #'s1 & 2 - the most graceful, gorgeous performances, at least on ice - I expect them to go very far.

Anybody else out there watching How I Met Your Mother?  Where's Jenny when I need her.  They can't end it that way. They just freakin can't!  I hope they are just trying to worry us because it sure got me worried!

The Voice was pretty solid last night. There are a few "soft" singers that got thru, but they probably won't make it tthrough the battle rounds. Highlights for me:

MJ (Team Usher) - She used to tour with Wyclef and some other artist, but couldn't capitalize on a singles career. She is definitely eye candy for the fellas.....MY GOD! The girl can sing, but I think she's a bit arrogant in her performance style.

Clarisa (Team Shakira) - Another piece of eye candy for the fellas. She's a strong pop singer, but I since a bit of county in her too. Even though she professed being an Usher fan, she went with Shakira, who turned her chair for her first.

Sisandra (Team Blake) - All that needs to be said is that she used to be Celine Dion's vocal director, and toured with her. It shows in her performance. Best of the season so far. She's a bit older and experienced than most, which may be the only thing that holds her votes back.

Tessanne Chin (Winner from last season) - She got a big push through a commercial last night. I think it was for hair care products. They also promoted her headlining the Voice Tour. They have an opportunity of producing their first star if they continue to promote her. She's a beautiful women, and rich in talent.

Overall, The Voice is laying out a stronger crop of singers than Idol. AI has some talented musicians, but the vocals are weak this season compared to other seasons.

Morning!

Interesting news. Apparently Idol has given up fighting Big Bang Theory and, as of Mar. 13, will move Thursday's results show to 9pm.  That should help Thursday's ratings a bit.

Hey guys, missed ya'll last week.  I was on an out of town trip and no where around the TV or News.  Came home Saturday night and watched both episodes of IDOL.  I knew that O'Connor was soon to be a gonner.  Although she sure is a pretty nurse.. Oh, well...

The New York Daily News is laughing at those who predict Idol's imminent demise:

But the notion that Seacrest, J.Lo or anyone else could bankrupt “Idol” is insane.

Sure, “Idol” doesn’t generate the ratings or stacks of cash it did during its heyday, like around 2005. Still, the show basically prints money — and remains among the top 10 most watched shows on TV.

“Idol” is on track to rake in around $578 million in ad revenue this season, according to Daily News calculations.

And that includes its two major sponsors, Coke and Ford, which have their brands integrated into the show. Their deals are estimated to be worth at least $10 million each, although network sources claim that figure is much greater.

JT: In the books, if you remember, Jo R described her as a plain girl with bushy hair. One of my favorite movie lines (not sure it was in the book) was in "Prisoner of Azkaban" when she and Harry time-travelled back a few hours and she saw herself, among other things, punch out Draco. At one point she asked "does my hair really look like that from behind?"

Pretty decent Oscar show. My fave winner and speech was Jared Leto - he so deserved to win, and his speech about his Mother was lovely and loving.

Poor Jennifer L - just can't go anywhere in a gown and jewels and stay upright! She should seriously consider dressy bejeweled flats for future formal events! But she always takes the tumbles in good grace and laughs at herself.

I was torn between Matthew Mc and Leo - absolutely hated Leo's film , but as always he was magnificent in the role. Loved M Mc's film, and he was equally good. I'm sure Leo will have another chance, and not so sure Matthew will, so I guess it was the right win.

Our little "Hermione" was really lovely last night. It's hard to watch the first 3 films and realize this gawky little girl would grow up to be so lovely. I'm glad she is having such a wonderful "after HP" career - and same for Daniel R. (I know JT - you "knew from the start she was a knockout").

Leonardo Dicaprio is another child actor who has become a respected adult actor.  Both he and Bale were among the nominees last night.  I just read that he has been in 7 Oscar nominated movies.

How often have we seen 2 former child actors waiting to hear the results of their best actor noms?

DeirdreC
DeirdreC

Morning!

I watched the Oscars last night and can't say I was disappointed with any of the winners.  For me, almost every category would have been a difficult decision because there were so many excellent films this year.  I saw all the nominated films(with the exception of Her) and thought that every one of them deserved a shot at the Oscar.

I am a fan of Christian Bale. He started out as a child actor in Empire of the Sun and has grown into an actor's actor.  His Oscar win for The Fighter was very much deserved and his portrayal of a two-bit con artist with a brain and a heart in American Hustle was amazing.  How often does a child actor grow to that potential? He also seems to learn from his mistakes re the obscenity laced tirade that hit the internet a few years ago.  He comes across as a nice guy now instead of a jerk...whether he really is a nice guy or is pretending to be one, it works.

Hope everybody has a nice weekend.  Last Friday the Blog Censor wouldn't allow me comments on movies opening that weekend, so this might not make it either I'll keep it short: "Stalingrad" interesting Tractor Movie with great special effects; "The Wind Rises" fascinating animated story about life of Japanese man who designed th panes that struck Pearl Harbor. "Non-Stop" - who doesn't want to see Liam Neeson in another action debacle?

Even without the Olympics, "Idol" got smashed instead by "The Big Bang Theory." "Idol" drew 9.8 million viewers in early ratings, flat from a week ago, with a 2.3 18-49 rating, worse than a week ago. Even the cruddy "Millers" at 8:30 p.m. beat "Idol." In the 18-49 demo, "Scandal," "Grey's Anatomy" and "Two and a Half Men" beat "Idol."

I didn't get the Bugg kid either. Nice hair, but not much of a singer. I don't believe he'd have made it to Hollywood either, DanJ!

Short day today - found a leak this am in the foyer that's got the 4 hear old wood flooring buckling, and wasn't able to find a connection to either the washer or water heater (which just had $600 spent on it a few weeks ago) - even though the leak is right at the door to the laundry/water heater room. So, going home to wait for the plumber to spend my retirement funds on yet another plumbing problem!

Y'all have a good weekend.

After re-watching lasts night show I still find myself scratching my head on Jake Bugg. Besides Keith's man crush from the snippet shown during auditions I saw nothing special. In fact I would not have even given the kid a ticket to Hollywood.

I mean this kid went on after Candice. I understand STARS who visit getting the later spot over ex-Idols but this guy?

I look at Ben and Malaya in kind of the same way.  They both bring a lot of energy on and off the stage, but this may weigh against them as the show progresses.  A lot of it may be nervous energy, but when it interferes with the performance, that's bad news.  The way I look at it, Malaya and Ben are in the same boat, but Ben has more fans.  Thus, Malaya will be gone next week.  Add CJ to the bottom 3 next week too.

We're at that point in the season where I'm not that concerned about who stays and who goes. As usual, we have quite a few that are cannon fodder with maybe a surprise vote-off along the way.

But at the same time, it seems like we haven't seen this group enough to get a good handle on them as in past seasons so they had best get up to speed in their performances real quick if they want to make the voters remember them.

The thing I find amazing about watching the first few films is how crazy her hair was. I wouldn't let my kid leave the house with hair like that, let alone be in a movie.

She looked great last night, in the pictures I scanned through after the show.

@RodneyHo Now is when all the nay-sayers should come in and say that Idol is dead. I guess they would if they hadn't already moved onto other things. Still not catastrophic numbers, but far from the glory days.

@Sam-A1 Good luck on plumbing problem.  I know whereof you speak!

@DanJohn  My wife and I actually enjoyed his performance.  He had this 60's kind of vibe, reminding me of a young Dylan.  For a 20 year old, I found it interesting and impressive.  I loved Candice on Idol, but not her song last night.  I hate it when singers go "Yeah yeah yeah" for an entire minute.  Her song was already very weird and sounded like a mash-up of two different songs.  She also missed a few notes and her runs were often overdone.  Like I said, she was my favorite as a contestant, but I was not blown away last night.  To each his/her own right?

DeirdreC

@DanJohn  Whiny-voiced Boy was not good, although I liked the song he sang.

DeirdreC

@G_  At least Ben's energy is directed.  Malaya is all over the place with flailing arms and goofy expressions and a mouth that speaks without the brain attached.  I understand that she's young but sheesh girl!  Get it together at least a little bit!

@Highlander1

Even though I have a fave or two, it really doesn't matter.  My entire outlook on the season is different this year.  It's like a March Madness bracket in basketball.  I'm picking contestants based on how I think the viewing audience will vote, not based on who I actually like.

DeirdreC

@JTesla  Your kid is luck enough to have relatively straight red hair.  Those of us with the other kind can't get a comb OR a brush through it on rainy days.  I used to iron my hair to get it to just lie down!

@JTesla I thought "Idol" would be doing better but clearly, the show is so old, it doesn't matter if the show better. Audiences have moved o n.

@MoFaux @DanJohnCandice in fact performed what I believe Ryan referred to as a "medley of her hits," which in this case was two of her songs: "Cried" and "Same Kind of Man."

MercedesS
MercedesS

@MoFaux @DanJohn This 60's thing... agree.  He actually reminded me of the early Beatles (1962), especially George Harrison, who did not sound so hot when they started out. I did "something else" too, when Candice was on. That double-Candice weirdness hurt my eyes.

DanJohn
DanJohn

@DeirdreC @DanJohn Whiny-voiced says it all. I guess what upset me was that I thought Idol would give Candice more of a push. Jake BUGGED me! I even tried to watch some of his youtube videos and found myself turning them off before they finished. Whoever booked him gets a thumbs down!

@DeirdreC @G_

Yeah, it's more obvious with Malaya and the braces don't help with her enunciation. Isn't Randy in the mentor role that's supposed help them work on this stuff?  Useless fatboy.

But Ben is gettting a bit annoying to me.  It was cute in the beginning because of the new excitement of making it.  But now, he's gotta get a grip too.  Even in his performance, he always has a tendancy to rush and sing over the tempo.  Stuff like that runs the band crazy.

JTesla
JTesla

@RodneyHo I wasn't doing other things and after 20 seconds found myself ignoring him as well.

DeirdreC
DeirdreC

@G_ @DeirdreC  I know you didn't watch the show last night.  Randy was ok.  As each contestant was brought up, we got to hear Randy(pre-recorded Randy is so much better than live Randy) talk about what the worked on and got to see a brief clip of his mentoring session.  It honestly wasn't bad.
