‘Idol’ bits: schedule change, Phillip Phillips, ‘The Voice’

With Fox’s “Rake” tanking, the network is moving the “Idol” results show from 8 p.m. Thursday to 9 p.m. Thursday starting next week. (It will remain 8 p.m. this week.)  Generally, viewership is better at 9 p.m. so that’s good news for “Idol.”

“Hell’s Kitchen” will air at 8 p.m. Thursday instead while “Rake’ is bumped to Fridays to die a slow death.

“Idol” will have an hour-long results show the next three weeks but go to 30 minutes starting March 27.

***
Phillip Phillips will perform new single ‘Raging Fire” on the results show Thursday.

“The Voice” continues to draw strong numbers: 15.7 million viewers Monday night with a 4.5 18-49 rating. That’s almost the same as its debut, with much better retention numbers than “Idol” had in January for its 13th season debut.

Here’s a sampling of what aired last night:

Sam Behymer does an impressive karaoke impression of Lorde with some really odd enunciation:

The Brothers Walker are kinda cute with their Zac Brown cover and Usher takes them:

And I love this girl! Clarissa Sema doing the Cranberries’ “Zombie.”  She’s a four-chair turner. She takes Shakira.

Melissa Jiminez sings a bit of “If I Ain’t Got You” in Spanish. She’s a good singer. She picks Usher over Shakira.

Sisaundra Lewis is very old school singing Aretha Franklin, A very impressive voice. She goes to Team Blake.

I am very sad about Keith's hair this year.  He was such eye candy last year, with his floppy hair and t-shirts.  Now he's.... not.  :-(

I like the coaches on The Voice as well. Idol has typcially picked past-the-expire date singers, and Keith Urban seems almost out of place.

I am doing a panel about social media and the entertainment biz tonight for the Technology Association of Georgia that runs from 6 to 8 so I'll likely be very late for tonight's top 12 performance show. I will leave a blog entry for y'all to use.

D: Not a spoiler for Mercedes, but I was a little let down by this week's "WD", as compared to the past two weeks. Some very stupid/silly things went on. I'll go over to the WD blog about it.

I finally finished watching last week's Idol!  I don't know that I really have a favorite yet.  No one has leapt out at me in the way that Carrie and Adam did in their seasons.  Not even close.

Who I like so far:
Caleb (it's about time for a good rocker!!)
Emily (she seems to have a very good voice.)
Majesty Rose (ditto on the voice, but I wish she'd sing something I know.  Lots of potential, though.)
Jena, and also the pink-haired girl are fairly good.

Who I don't:
The two twangy-country guys.  Ick!!!!

And poor Sam - wow, he really didn't do well last Wednesday.  After "Babylon", I thought he was going to be a lot better than that.

HC JR of course!!!!!

Wow - like Homecoming around here today!

I have ever only watched "Voice" in bits and pieces, like during commercials of the shows I'm actually watching - rarely seen more than 20 or 30 mins when my usual show is not on a particular night, but it's the coaches I find most interesting, especially the interaction between."rock guy" and "country boy" - very entertaining. That's more interesting than any contestant I've happened to see. And actually like Shakira a lot (Xtina - not at all).

This year's Idol is leagues above the past few - mostly due to JC Jr, I think. And all the finalists can actually sing - some just better than others - that's a new twist.

Dan J - agree with your earlier comment re Phillipx2 - Liked him in the auditions films, but not too much during the season, until I realized he was getting better, and that he brought something much "fresher" or "newer" to the show than the rest of them. By the time he won, I was all on his side. And he's doing really great - good on him!

Rodney, let's not compare apples to oranges. So the "5th" season of The Voice drew better numbers than the 13th season debut of Idol. What were the numbers for Idol's 5th season debut? (I put The Voice's "5th" in quotation marks since they've actually done more than one 'season' per year now.)

We all know Idol has lost some viewership and we've discussed the various reasons. But this season's changes (so far) have been like a bright light. Kudos to Fox, so far.

I've been a fan of The Voice since day one. The show is doing well not so much because of any "superstars" that have been discovered (since there really haven't been, yet) but more because of the FRIENDLY rivalry among the judges. The show is just fun to watch. And that's where Simon failed miserably with X-Factor U.S.

Nana's and Harriett's gift to us is bringing old friends back to say hello.

I've been a very infrequent visitor here lately, primarily due to surgery to repair some degenerative discs  - probably from being dropped on my head too many times in Judo! :D

Very sad to hear about Nana and Harriet. Both of them were so much fun to "listen" to here. No doubt they're watching Idol together now and wishing they could share their thoughts with us.

Prayers and condolences to both of their families.

Listened to the girl singing the Cranberries song. Not impressed. Not sure why all four turned.

These people (judges) hear something entirely different than I do. I think someone does well... the judges don't. I think someone isn't that good... the judges think they're amazing!

I think that's why I don't watch any more.

@DebraDunson, I'm guessing from people's comments that your nickname used to be Harmony?  I'm newer-ish than many of those here, but I remember you too.  I'm so sorry about your dogs.  I've been through both cancer and old age with my furbabies too.  They leave such a hole in your heart when they go.  :'-(

Jenny11

And @DeirdreC , I watched HIMYM.  Wow.  :-O  It looks like they might really be going down that road.

Though I must say, I'd be surprised if they do, after it's been out there for so long as a rumor.  This show is, after all, the absolute king of twists you NEVER see coming.  Surely they won't go with something so many have predicted??

@missnadine I enjoy The Voice as well but I do think the revamped Idol judges are great this year. Harry has added something that has been lacking the past few years. Honest critiques! Even J-Lo has been better than when she was on before.

@Jenny11 Clearly, the nerves got to Sam. And he picked a crap song, too. He is a little more inexperienced than I had anticipated. He must have been aware of all the buzz about him on social media so that may have messed with his head, too.

@Jenny11

What we have this season is a handful of musicians and songwriters. Caleb seems to be the strongest vocalist, but the rest of them sing okay at best.

I agree with you on the two twangy country boys!

@Highlander1 I agree. "The Voice" has a very casual, fun vibe, like a party. That's probably why I like the early rounds. It's different from "Idol" that way. I do hope "The Voice" finds a big star one day. And I am indeed glad "Idol" feels much better this year and has a cool vibe thanks to HCJ. Even if the numbers aren't there (which is a bummer), I am enjoying it. And at least those who have stuck around are happier to - I hope.

@DebraDunson  Me either, Harm.  I have a few I like better than others but time changes things so I will take a wait and see attitude for the next couple of weeks.

Thank you, I'm fine, Bear and Bruiser had long lives, 15&1/2 and 11 years!

@Jenny11 @DeirdreC  I don't see how they can go there.  It's too sad a way to end a comedy show. Plus they did with with Marshall's dad.  I hope they are just setting us up with a red herring.

Jenny11

@DanJohn @missnadine- And I think he'll also put emphasis on the quality of the songs they choose.  I like how he's called a few of them out on what their songs actually mean.

Jenny11
Jenny11

@DanJohn @missnadine- I agree about Harry!  He's refreshingly honest.  I feel like he'll fight for the BEST singers, not just the most popular!

Jenny11
Jenny11

@G_ - Though I have a lot of hope this year that Harry will do his best to ensure strong talent at the top.

Jenny11
Jenny11

@RodneyHo @G_ - Yeah, I generally like Matchbox 20, but that's not one of their best songs.  And he sounded - weird.  Sort of tuneless, or out of tune, or something.  Not exactly sure, but nothing like when he sang David Grey.

And LOL at G.  You know that's my biggest frustration!  That's why last year was so nice to watch.  :-)

G_

@RodneyHo @Jenny11

Sam has a lot of room to mess up.  That's the bad thing about popularity shows.  Oooops, did I say "popularity show"?

Jenny11
Jenny11

@G_ - Yep.  My thoughts exactly.  Just not a clear leader in the bunch.

Though it's still early... maybe someone will begin to pull away from the pack, talent-wise.

@KellyandCarrieFan @Highlander1 Thanks, K&CF! Feeling pretty good. Never had much pain thanks to Vicodin! But the neck brace is a pain.

@DeirdreC - I really think it's a red herring.  I just don't see them being this transparent, this far before the finale.

Except... except... my worry is the second article I posted yesterday.  The last paragraph in particular.  Even though I used to be a die hard Ted and Robin fan, that would be a horrible ending.  (Plus I absolutely adore the Mother.  They CAN'T slap all the fans in the face, now that we love her.)

Hello! I'm glad I took the time to come back, I wish it wasn't because of the sad circumstances.
