CSS Sports shutting down June 1

By Rodney Ho

The regional sports network CSS is shutting down June 1 after a 15-year-old run.

General manager Mark Fuhrman today informed the 20 full-time employees who will be losing their jobs, a source close to the situation told me.

The primary reason why CSS is going away? The new SEC sports network set to arrive in August in cooperation with ESPN. (Details here.)

Without SEC conference games, the CSS will lose a major source of programming, revenue and viewership.

This will also impact 790/The Zone, which has been simulcasting its morning show for several years on the cable channel. The current show, which is led by Alge Crumpler and JP Peterson, pulls in significantly fewer viewers than what Mayhem in the AM had until that show was let go following the Steve Gleason ALS bit debacle last June. (Steak Shapiro is now on from 9 a.m. to noon on 680/The Fan; Chris Dimino joins the Rude Awakening in mornings starting March 17 and Nick Cellini is still seeking a new job.)

Comcast and Charter subscribers get the channel here locally.  CSS reaches 5.5 million homes in 12 states.

CSS also runs Sun Belt Conference games (including those by Georgia State) that will have to find a new home.

Presumably, the SEC Network will take its place on those networks though nothing has been confirmed.

Comcast Sports Group runs a dozen regional sports networks across the country. CSS is the only one that lacks a professional sports team.

So, will Comcast and Charter carry the SEC Network?

Steak Shapiro is back on-air??   How desperate is 680?   SS is NOT good on-air talent, and doesn't know "enough" about sports.  Sad, considering how long he's polluted ATL radio/tv airwaves over the years.

hopefully i don't have to listen to brent musberger too much on sec games---his voice makes me nauseous

Comcast has a lock on the Atlanta Market because of their internet service.  I live right out side the AT&T area and Windstream is much more expensive and very slow.  So I am stuck with Comcast till Clear gets faster speeds.

So, will anyone pick up the game reruns? I guess I will have to pay for and figure out DVR.

I suspect Comcast subscriptions will decrease heavily in Atlanta when the SEC Network begins.

Due to cheaper choices from other satellite or cable providers, that will carry the SEC Network and all the other same programming as Comcast.

Unless Comcast does the smart thing and decreases their cable prices.

No CSS? Great. I can leave Comcast now. I only wanted it (CSS) for the SEC games and programs.

Now I will have other choices when the SEC Network starts.

Are you listening Comcast? Make my cost cheaper to stay onboard or I will jump ship for the same channels from a different provider.

Comcast just lost their bargaining chip to hold me hostage.

Looking forward to Dimino joining 680, a truly talented interviewer and respected around baseball. Still not sure how Shapiro was able to get Ray Mariner canned and take his job. Mariner is not the most entertaining host, but certainly not an overbearing self-promoter as is 'Steaky'. Cellini should probably relocate to a city where he's unknown. He had/has the double whammy of being a jerk and lacking any particular talent or skill set to do talk radio.

Will miss some of the programming on CSS. Life goes on, I guess.

790 morning show is horrible, i like Alge, he is better as a guest than a host. The problem with so many  of hosts who comes from another city is they immediately try to be the biggest homer. JP as well as "Hip Hop": John Michael epitomizes this. They are all rah rah, see how big of a fan of the local team. They had the same schist when they were at the location/city from where they last worked. They are almost as bad as Beau.

Estimates for the SEC Network go from $0.95 - $1.35 a month.

So, does anyone know if the SEC Network will have different programming for different states/regions or will everyone get the same programs?

Wish the best for my boys Radi, Stinch & Shock.  Looking forward to seeing all of the UGA content moved to the SEC Network!

I have heard more than 10 bucks a month.

Not necessarily a big surprise about 90% of their content was really sort of boring.

So, does anyone know if the new SEC Network will be included as part of the basic cable packages or will it require adding some sort of premium package?

Well Wayne you won't get Chuck announcing but to get  2 also rans in a conference check the BIG TEN Network !     I know funny stuff.

Football is Football I can watch any game that  time permits me. Doesn't matter if it is the Ivy League, Mountain West,  if it is the best game going or the only game going I am watching.

I wonder just how much the S E C Network is going to cost us a month ?  I will pay it I just wonder how much will it be.

Chuck is not so bad I have heard much worse.

So where will people get their fix of Chuck Oliver announcing a football game between two also-rans in a conference no one cares about on a channel no one watched?

How long do you think before they get Steak (ugh) and Dimino on same show? They'll either hire Cellini (saying he served his pennance) to join them or replace Finneran with Dimino.

I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually wind up with steak, dimino, and sandra or steak, dimino, and cellini and their juvenile, frat boy humor.

Not saying I like it. Just saying I wouldn't be surprised.

Steak doesn't fit with Finn and Sandra.

Get steak off the radio altogether.

92.9 is the worst. Want to feel like an out of place white guy in a black barbershop?

Listen to that crappy station throughout the day. I tried a couple of times. Couldn't understand the ebonics between the hosts and callers.

Yea, if you are fond of fat braggards that think they know more than they do. An expert, without a clue.

Are you talking about the same "Tech can't block Auburn" Oliver. The comment made prior to both butt-kickings in 03' & 05'? Yea, I thought so.

@HotDawg

"their juvenile, frat boy humor" .... you wouldn't be referring to Mike Bell would you, HotDawg? LOL

@HotDawg I would think from that comment you only listen to the psychotic rantings of Rush and whatever other nuts that are on right wing talk radio.

Move Bell over to the Fan and the incestuous relationship between the two stations will be complete! LOL

No, really please don't.

Bell does seem lonely over there between the crickets of archer and michaels.
