‘American Idol’ bits: Power 8, 1980s theme, ‘The Voice’ tour

I don’t think I’m going to change much in my Power 8 this week considering everybody performed decently last week.

The theme this week is the 1980s, which is pretty open. Season 7 winner David Cook will be the mentor.  That’s really oldies nowadays, isn’t it? Most of these contestants weren’t even alive during the 1980s! The song spoilers are out and it’s a bit disappointing. I won’t reveal them. (You can read them here.)

1. Caleb Johnson. He is so good with the rock genre, judges want him to go power ballad. “Here I Go Again.” “Love Bites.” “Wanted Dead or Alive.” “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.” He’s got plenty of choices but he doesn’t pick any of those. It’s not one I would have chosen. Let’s see if he can show the proper emotion and make it work. (1)

2. Alex Preston. He is the only other male singer with a real shot at winning but he’s got a major hurdle in Caleb. His pick could be quite mesmerizing. (2)

3. Jena Irene. She’s still my top girl, consistently finding ways to make her performances interesting, if not always great. Her song pick tonight is all attitude and grrl power. Let’s see if she can pull it off. (3)

4. Jessica Meuse. I moved her up. She is gaining more confidence. Hopefully, she’ll be able to channel the artist she picked and make it more than a pleasant karaoke version. (4)

5. Malaya Watson. She is getting better and shouldn’t be discouraged by being in the bottom three. She still has a shot at the top 5 though winning appears highly unlikely. Her song choice should work well with her voice. (5)

6. Dexter Roberts. I’m moving him ahead of Sam since he seems to have more support and had a better performance last week. He goes all cheeseball with a song I like to sing karaoke but I’m not sure it’s going to go down well. (7)

7. Sam Woolf. The fact he was actually eliminated last week tells you how weak his fan base has been. He may be DOA with his song choice, a classic chosen by many past “Idol” singers. (6)

8. CJ Harris. It’s just a matter of time. Interesting song pick that could be great or a disaster depending on how CJ goes with it. (8)

Ratings continue to slip off in steady fashion.

On Wednesday night, “Survivor” again beat “Idol” in both total viewers (9.55 million to 8.77 million) and 18-49 viewers (2.2 vs. 2.1). Those are again series lows for a performance show.

The Thursday results show also landed another series low: 7.7 million viewers with a mere 1.7 18-49 rating.  It came in third in the time frame behind “Two and a Half Men” and “Grey’s Anatomy” during the 9 p.m. hour.

Writing this item is kind of sad. I used to post ratings numbers just to show how much “Idol” was beating up on everybody else. Now it  has trouble holding its own against three other rather aged shows.

The show that’s helping kill off “Idol,” “The Voice” is going on its first tour with past contestants.  It will be at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre June 29. Tickets go on sale April 17 at www.aeglive.com or www.thevoice.com/tour.

From the press release:

Already confirmed on the tour is Jamaica native and Season 5 champ, Tessanne Chin. Also joining the tour from Season 5 is soul-pop teen artist, and runner up, Jacquie Lee and vocal powerhouse and family man, Will Champlin. Dia Frampton, a Team Blake favorite, from Season One will be hitting the road too, along with this season’s Winner, Runner Up, and 3rd place. Another fan favorite is guaranteed to tour and will be determined in the month of May by America via social media.

James Durbin from season 10 is expecting a second child.

My top 3 are the same as yours Rodney but I would put Malaya at #4. Love her personality but she does have to be more consistent. Also sometimes she seems a bit old fashioned. Hope Caleb kills with an 80's power ballad tonight.

Well, I've listened to the studio versions of Alex's, Jena's, Jessica's and Sam's songs... Jena botched it! Ugh. I do not think "Call Me" was a good choice for Jessica. I'm actually NOT a fan of Alex's version of "Every Breath You Take". Sam, you better BRING IT on stage! Connect with a girl, touch hands, whatever... CONNECT.

SPOILER ALERT   DUET SONGS:

The Girl is Mine by Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney
It’s Only Love by Bryan Adams and Tina Turner
I Knew You Were Waiting for Me by Aretha Franklin and George Michael
Islands in the Stream by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton

Noticed on a side bar on MJ's blog that good old Off-Key Lee (Dewyze) has a new song (titled 'Blackbird Song') that's going to be featured on an episode of The Walking Dead. ...I'll refrain from any comments on that. Much too easy!

Night, everyone!  Enjoy the show!  And let's all take a minute to pay tribute to the 80s...

Hast du etwas Zeit für mich
Singe ich ein Lied für dich
Von Neunundneunzig Luftballons
Auf ihrem Weg zum Horizont

Denkst du vielleicht g'rad an mich
Dann singe ich ein Lied für dich
Von Neunundneunzig Luftballons....

RoHo:  That might be it. Can't remember - they had a "tic tac toe" kind of frame with a bunch of faces in it.

Enjoy the show everyone.

More wishful thinking for Sam:
Don Henley's "The Boys of Summer"
Elton John's "Nikita"
UB40's "Red Red Wine"
Dream Academy's "Life In A Northern Town"

And I would PAY to hear someone (anyone) do:
Nena's "99 Luftballon"
A-Ha's "The Sun Always Shines (On TV)"
Nik Kershaw's "The Riddle"

I recently saw an ad for a new singing show this summer - said it would "Be totally different from anything else" - can't remember name or channel.

Oh, Jenny, Jenny, Jenny - don't you know "Crimson & Clover" was written/recorded and was a hit by Tommy James and the Shondells. You are my Much Younger Sister, I guess.

Hey, Rodney, did you watch last week's Survivor?  HahahaHAHA!  Best episode this season!  Sarah drove me nuts so I loooovved seeing her downfall, after all that bragging!  :-)

Now, can we please get rid of Spencer and his giant chin and his smirks.  Ick.  For a "brain", he sure is snotty, and his little eye-rolling expressions make me want to just smack him.  :-)

Hey @G_- I don't faithfully watch the Voice, but I see bits and pieces, and I am with you on Sisaundra (sp?)  I really like what I've seen of her!!

Thrilled they're doing an 80s night.  I still haven't watched last week's recording, but I'll definitely watch tonight.  My thoughts on the songs?  Usually when they do 80s nights, the Idols pick the "BIG HITS!!!!!!" that are not necessarily my favorites.  But this year, with a couple of exceptions, I'm looking forward to what they've picked!  :-)

Dexter - Loved, loved, LOVED the Georgia Satellites.  So many good memories there.  I'm predisposed to like him this week, just because he picked this.

Alex - meh.  Overplayed. Would MUCH rather have heard King of Pain, Don't Stand So Close To Me, or Wrapped Around Your Finger.  OR… my fave, Synchronicity II:
"Many miles away...
There's a shadow on the door
Of a cottage on the shore
Of a dark
Scottish lake….."

Caleb - Well, I do love this song.  But not sure it's for him. I was wishing for "Love Bites".  Or maybe "Jack And Diane" (though yeah, I know, I know, he's supposed to go slow this week.)

Sam - Again, I love this song, but is this the right artist for him? How bout the Pet Shop Boys' "West End Girls"?

Jena - GREAT pick.  She ought to rock this.  She also could've done "Crimson and Clover" and been great.

Jessica - As with Alex - meh.  Overplayed.  How bout Sunday Girl, The Tide Is High, or Dreaming, if she wants Blondie?  (And was the person at MJ's thinking of the right song?  The rap part?  Are they thinking of Rapture?  Now, that would be fun…

"And then you're in the man from Mars. You go out at night, eating cars."

CJ - one of my top few faves from Tom Petty, along with Don't Do Me Like That and Refugee (neither of which he could've pulled off, so this one's great.)

Malaya - the only song I'm not sure I know.

Koko, scroll back down to our earlier long thread about MTV, etc.  Mercedes reminded me of some funny trivia!

Enjoyed chatting!  talk to you tomorrow!

@KokoSnoot Wait - how did you listen to the studio versions already?  They must be releasing them earlier than they used to?

@Highlander1  I believe you are about to witness history being made on this blog.  For the first time ever I'm about to post a song by someone I NEVER thought I would......here's a song by Lee DeWyze written for The Walking Dead: (I know, right?)

DeirdreC

@Highlander1  It actually was debuted about 4 episodes ago and he wrote it specifically for The Walking Dead.  Much as I hesitate to say it, the song was pretty good.

Jenny11
Jenny11

@Sam-A1 - I do know it was.  :-)  But the Joan Jett version was during "my" years, and I've always loved it.

KokoSnoot
KokoSnoot

@Jenny11  Totally agree about other Police songs- Every Breath You Take is probably my least favorite of all of their singles, most likely due to the amount of air play- King Of Pain is incredible.

Love Bites would have been awesome! West End Girls or a Duran Duran tune would have been awesome for Sam, I agree, I'm a little disappointed with Time After Time- he needed to light up the stage this week.

KokoSnoot
KokoSnoot

@Jenny11  Will do, Jenny! Enjoyed chatting as well! The studio versions are now on YouTube!

Jenny11
Jenny11

@KokoSnoot - Haha!  You must be an 80s baby too!  :-)  This is my music... my Sirius XM in the car stays mostly on "80s on 8"...

Jenny11
Jenny11

Oh, and one last thought, Koko... yep, King of Pain might've worked best for Alex. I'm not so sure he could've pulled off "Don't Stand So..." believably (though I'd love to hear him try.)

"It's no use

He sees her

He starts to shake and cough

Just like the

Old man in

That book by Nabokov..."

Jenny11
Jenny11

@KokoSnoot - oh, and I was with you on Malaya doing Whitney.  I would have liked to hear that.

Jenny11
Jenny11

@KokoSnoot - Yes!  Duran Duran would've been great for him!!  I would have liked to hear Rio or Union of the Snake, but he probably would've picked Save A Prayer.  Any and all would've been good!  :-)

KokoSnoot
KokoSnoot

@Jenny11 @MercedesS  Yes, I later found out that was Courteney!!! So, cool! I once got to touch Nick Carter's hand during a Backstreet Boys concert... that's the closest I ever got to being a Courteney! :)

Jenny11
Jenny11

@MercedesS - OMG, Mercedes, yes!!  Courtney Cox!  And he REALLY did that in his concerts.  Pulled a girl from the front row onstage to dance with him (and rumor had it she got pulled offstage for a kiss before being sent back to the audience!)  I so wanted to be that girl!

(Trivia - that video was how Courtney got her start, supposedly.)

Jenny11
Jenny11

@KokoSnoot - he is!  And I love seeing him in concert.  He puts on one of the best shows around.

I have boxes and boxes of cassette "mix tapes", somewhere.  I don't think we had a VCR back then, or I'm sure I'd have music videos too.

KokoSnoot
KokoSnoot

@Jenny11  Thanks!

I had several VHS tapes with music videos on them and would record songs on the radio as well! I wish I could find them now!

Love Bruce, he is still pretty "cute"! :)

Jenny11
Jenny11

@KokoSnoot  - Me too!  Well said above... music really is the key back to my childhood.

And I can still picture Bruce Springsteen's "Dancing In The Dark" video... I would wait and wait for them to show it.  (too bad DVRs didn't exist back then...)

I discovered him much earlier, in his Born to Run days, but that video... he was just too cute for words.

KokoSnoot
KokoSnoot

@Jenny11 @KokoSnoot  Absolutely! Gosh, that was so much fun. If I wasn't outside or doing homework, I was watching MTV!

Jenny11
Jenny11

@KokoSnoot -  Oh, the old MTV!!  I miss it so much!  "Video Killed The Radio Star".... I would watch my MTV for hours on end!  And remember how they'd make a big deal of debuting a new video, and you'd wait all week to see it?

(Which reminds me of a song Jena could do... "We Belong" by Pat Benatar.)

KokoSnoot
KokoSnoot

@Jenny11 @KokoSnoot  I miss him! Music is the key back to my childhood and he and the old MTV were a huge part of it!

Jenny11
Jenny11

@KokoSnoot - Yep, it can be.  Luckily I have a short commute.

I do love the 70s channel on the weekends, when they play random Kasey Casem American Top 40s from different months/years.  Complete with all his trivia and comments.  Wow, it never fails to take me back.

Jenny11
Jenny11

@KokoSnoot  Though I do branch out to "Classic Vinyl", "Classic Rewind" and "70s on 7".

Jenny11
Jenny11

Though it's also partly just me... I always did like "album cuts" better than the "big" songs on an album.

Jenny11
Jenny11

@KokoSnoot - I've always wondered if those lists include only the "biggest hits".  There are always sooooo many other great songs that no one ever goes near....

KokoSnoot
KokoSnoot

@Jenny11  Completely agree with all of your points, Jenny! I really wonder if the contestants truly are able to pick their songs. I've heard they are given a list of 100 or so, but I really think the producers have more than a little control over it.

Jenny11
Jenny11

Even with the risk she might scream.  Or... she might not have!  She may have progressed past that!
