‘American Idol’ top 8 results show (part deux): no more save!

Malaya Watson didn’t make it through the fire of her shaky performance last night and was ousted.

The excitable band geek with braces did make it far further than I expected when she entered the top 13. I was surprised she even made it to the top 13 in the first place.

She was an untamed lioness on stage, who had no clue what she was doing at first. Vocally, she was also all over the place. Even when she found her big notes, they lacked the fullness of more mature singers. She often sounded shrill, which is what happened last night.

I do give her credit for often (but not always) connecting with her songs and emoting with purpose. Some weeks, she found the control and channeled her energies properly. But it was clear she was not going to win “American Idol,’ even with her improvements.

So even if the save were in play, she wouldn’t have gotten it.

If anything, she was likable and sweet. She sang with joy in her heart. You have to wonder if she had a bit more seasoning how she’d perform on the show.

I predicted last night that Malaya was most likely to go home, ahead of C.J. Harris and Dexter Roberts. There was only a bottom two and it was Malaya and C.J.

I am now five for seven in predictions so far this season, which is pretty darn good for me.

The three contestants yet to make the bottom three were safe again: Caleb Johnson, Alex Preston and Jessica Meuse.

This was also a no frills elimination half hour. No guest performances at all. I can’t remember the last time they had a results show without one.

I have picked the right person with the fewest votes four out of six times so far. I missed Sam last week. Nobody has ever been eliminated the week after their save so I think he’s safe regardless.

The Ford ad was adorable using “Would You Rather” as the theme.

I'd like to see Dexter be given "Helter Skelter" - that'd absolutely ensure tne end of him! I know it's mean - but hey, if he goes, I don't care!

I do hope they let us know the song choices and then which one the contestant chose

I wonder how this process was done. Did each Idol draw a name of another? Will be interesting to hear the song picks.

Morning!

Tonight's theme has me wondering.  Will we get to hear what song each Idol chose for the other contestants?  That would be one way of making sure no one tries to undermine an opponent.  Making each song choice public puts more pressure on the chooser.

Glad to hear about Linny.

And Poor Hubby! I'm afraid my recent ailments may be a development of Celiac or similar - I am one of those with the enduring belief "bread is the staff of life" or at least one of it's greatest pleasures! I could NOT toss wheat-made things out of my diet.

Deirdre:  If you're thinking about taking over the cooking posts for our dear, departed Nana, please make sure to include luscious pies, cookies, cakes, et al.

Have you heard anything recently re Linny - it's been about 3 or 4 weeks since you last gave us some information.

I am planning to dvr it so that I can give it a shot.  I'll watch a couple of episodes and then decide.

Not around much today.  I'm making eggplant parmesan tonight and it is an all day process for me.

Mercedes:  I loved the movie, but not so sure about the tv series - a little of those accents might go a long way!

ANybody here plan to watch "Fargo" the TV show? Starts tonight at 10 on the FX channel.  Loved the movie and like the actors so might give it a shot.

Good morning.....Aaah the smell of clean air for a minute.  No pollen after the rain.

I abhor that "pick your group" crap! It's humiliating for most of those forced to choose. I like the kids who've refused and just stood between the two.

Seven.

Predicting the top 4: Caleb, Jena, Alex and Jess.  Either that or Dexter will win.

And comment #200!

And good Monday morning!

Let's hope no tornadoes and no hail come our way.

I remember Katie - I really liked her - she had a good voice and was good onstage. Sad when she left.

I disagree about Meatloaf - I think Caleb would do grrrreat! And I think his fans would love it.

Another one of my sick days - had to leave the Dogwood Festival after only an hour. I have to say some very classy people attend the DF - at least 4 people stopped to ask if I needed help - seeing a woman sitting on a bench outside the parking structure being sick in a bag! I was moved by that.  Got to get this problem diagnosed and STOPPED!

I'm ready for the finals.  Caleb v. Jena and I would give Caleb a 75/25 chance of taking it.  I really can't see anyone else with a chance and please God, not Alex.

The mystic in me is predicting Jessica may be in for a surprise exit. Is anyone else noticing that when the other contestants hear their results they console, or congratulate each other - Jessica just moves on. She's a good singer, but not as good as she thinks she is! To cool for school too!! Re below - if Caleb does Meatloaf it will finish him because it's to obvious and would absolutely pigeon hole him. My top three...Caleb, Jeena, and it should be Jessica but see above.

For me (for you), the results show has stopped being must-watch TV. (I do still DVR it.)

We've been going out with friends on Thursday nights and I don't feel as if we miss much. If there is a good guest performance that everyone starts talking about, I'll watch the DVR. Otherwise I just delete it.

Early off today to meet with handyman re repairs. Good weekend everyone. I'm planning on going to the Dogwood Festival, and glad the weather is supposed to be nice.

RoHo: BITE your tongue - I couldn't stand to hear anyone sing that screeching/wailing "Loving You", especially my favorite singer on the show!!!!! Wish someone would give him a Meatloaf song

I'm a pretty good "reader" of people and I've just about got Sam figured out: he's insecure and looks scared. I see virtually no self-confidence. When he comes down from the performance stage and slaps hands with the crowd lining the way, he has NO eye-contact with anyone along the line and can't wait to get back to the safety and security of the other contestants.

If I could get Sam to show some passion or some fire or some hint of depth, I would. He's a great singer but has the passion of a robot...seriously. Harry Connick was right to tell Sam to go look at old Rick Nelson videos on YouTube. Sam should also look at the old Johnny Depp movie "Cry Baby". If he doesn't get his chops right in terms of connecting with the audience...he's toast.

Cmon, Sam...get passionate, dude!

@Sam-A1  I think they had to pick a song for all of the other contestants.  That way, each contestant had at least 6(probably more like8) songs from which to choose.

@Sam-A1  Linny is doing just fine.  As she puts it, she will always have this cancer but it is being well controlled right now and she is her usual feisty self.

@Sam-A1  Sam, my husband has a gluten sensitivity so pies, cookies and cakes don't visit my house.  It's amazing how his sensitivity is helping me to lose weight!

@Woodpappy But now "strong winds" (bye cable, by power) are moving in, ruining beautiful blooms

@Sam-A1 Didn't he actually sit down between the groups? And who was he?

Is 7 when Ryan traditionally split the group in half and made one person pick which group they should be in?

DeirdreC

@Sam-A1  Yes Sam.  See a doctor soon.  Have you tried eliminating gluten?  My husband used to eat a half a loaf of a crusty french bagette with just about every meal. When I told him no more bread for awhile, his horrible nightly heartburn went away...completely.  Just a suggestion and not an excuse to not see a doc.

@DeirdreC Don't remember her at all - very nice girl, and nice voce too.  This was the Ellen season (season 9?) and I don't remember too much about it beyond Ellen's deer-in-headlights appearances.

@DeirdreC I'm going with Season 9... since it says that in the video title ;)

@Kdp273 Do you think you might be affected by the Hollywood show where Jessica was made out to be a rhymes with witch? I know I was, but once she started singing, I forgot what went before. And I think some levelheaded person -  Deirdre? - pointed out this probably fake drama.

@Sam-A1

I'm going back to a song from 1971, but I'd love to hear Caleb sing "Go Down Gamblin'" by Blood Sweat and Tears.  They would obviously shorten it to focus on Caleb's vocals but this would be right in his wheelhouse.

If you're unfamiliar with the song listen all the way through.  The last minute, in particular, would definitely showcase Caleb's strong voice.

@MercedesS @Sam-A1  There's been more than one who refused to pick.  Can't remember which one sat down...it was either Taylor or David Cook, I think.

@DeirdreC  My wife predicted that Alex would be the most polarizing of the finalists when he first made it.  This is the same wife who responded to my liking Emily with, "She's a wannabe sexpot that doesn't have what it takes so I've learned to trust her.
