‘American Idol’ top 6 results recap

By Rodney Ho

In the most predictable results show of the season, C.J. Harris finished 7th and landed the fewest votes last night.

He’s the second Alabama man to go home in a row. This leaves Jessica Meuse (who was also in the bottom two) as the remaining Alabama resident left in the competition. And she’s been a bottom dweller two weeks in a row!

Again, Alex Preston and Caleb Johnson are the only two left who have not been in the bottom. For six weeks, I’ve been predicting a final two with those two men. That assessment has not changed.

I liked C.J. a lot as a person. He came across as sweet and pleasant, a purely likable dude. He brought soul and a bluesy style that worked well with certain songs. But he had virtually no versatility and his inability to stay in tune worked against him most of the time.

His personality (and the fact he was from Alabama) probably helped keep him in the competition far longer than anybody expected.

Recently, C.J. had been picking good songs for his voice recently but last night, his  Zac Brown performance was nothing short of embarrassing for a top 7 contestant. Even Sanjaya might have winced. He had trouble with the intonations and the pacing of the song, which is a little odd anyway (I’ve tried it myself in karaoke). One terrible performance sealed the deal.

I predicted Jena or Jessica being the other two in the bottom two so by hedging, I sort of got it right.

Wow.... only five posts so far today. As Idol continues its long slide into oblivion... its certainly taking its toll on this blog.

Tomorrow night's theme is Audience Requests.  A few weeks ago viewers were asked to tweet song title requests for each Idol.  A list was put together of the favorite choices.

I guess I missed whatever the theme is for tomorrow night?????

Hope everyone local is safe after the weather last night. There's supposed to be more coming, so batten down the hatches.

Of course, I hope everyone NOT local is safe too!

Glad you made it back safely Deirdre, was very very quiet around here yesterday.

Morning!

Got home last night in time for the storms.  Actually, we flew over and around the storms.  It was an interesting ride.  Six Flags might be thinking about including it.

Looking forward to Idol tomorrow and hoping that the viewers have a little more inventiveness in song choices than the Idols have had.

Morning! Oh, wait, it isn't morning in Atlanta anymore. Yes, I am on the west coast but will be back home soon. Enjoy your day and I will check in with you tomorrow.

Good morning. Mercedes, I saw "Other Woman" - very pretty movie (Bahamas has the most beautiful beaches and water of all the Caribbean, I think). And some pretty funny stuff. But that Leslie whatever (is that her name?) was so way over the top thru most of the movie - I could totally have done without her.

So I've been thinking for many weeks that Alex's mannerisms on stage (eye movements, uncomfortable/shy smile, leg movements) reminded me of someone but I couldn't think of who.  I was playing music trivia at a restaurant over the weekend and then it hit me - he reminds me of Tiny Tim.  Not vocals, but his performance movements, expressions and quirks.  Check out this clip (mute if you can't stand the sound or if your dog is sleeping), especially between the 1:04 to 1:29 mark.

RoHo: "But he had virtually no versatility...."

Funny, that seems to have worked quite well for three of the last four champions - Lee DeWyze, Scotty McCreary and Phillip Phillips - (Candace Glover notwithstanding.)

Oh, goody - my office is within spittin range of Kennesaw State U - and apparently there's a gunman running around the campus. Our front door is on a timer, and we can't figure out how to get it locked NOW. Glass door at street level.

Guess I'm moving back to locked up area!

Mercedes: What role does Don Johnson have - just noticed his name in the cast in the AJC review (C+) this am. Man, I loved DJ in "Miami Vice".

Some chick flicks might be  for "girls" only - "The Other Woman" is receiving lots of negative reviews from male critics.  I had fun!  Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton take revenge on serial philanderer Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (one-handed Game of Thrones guy).

With the exception of Caleb, none of the other contestants appear to be strong and confident in their abilities.

Somebody finally sings a Zac Brown song on one of these singing shows...and it's awful :(

CJ picked the best songs, dude just couldn't sing.   Sorry.

I have a very busy day in front of me so if I don't make it back here until late, have a good weekend blogsters!

Rodney, CJ didn't have one terrible performance.  His first song wasn't good either. Then there's almost everything else he sang.

I think that the 5 people left standing have the strongest voices of the whole group.  I might have included Dexter in the "good voice" list if he hadn't been so one note.  I actually don't think I'd be upset if any of these five took the crown.  I don't like Jena's voice at all but she's a good performer so I won't cry if she wins. I love Alex's style if not his voice.  Caleb is tops for me with a good voice and excellent stage work.  Both Sam and Jessica have a lot of performance skills problems but you can't deny that they have very good voices.  Yep, I think I'd be ok with any of them as a winner.

So top 5 in order are Caleb, Jena, Alex, Sam, Jessica? Interesting in that Sam was literally voted off what 3 weeks ago? So long to C.J., a good, humble, spiritual guy. He'll be back around for the summer tour. His ride is still happening.

This whole season has been a boring season with not so stellar singers

In Idol news this morning, Jason Mraz will mentor the Top 5(isn't it nice to know that at least somebody will mentor them this week?) and Keith Urban will perform on the results show.

And notice that Rodney didn't even bother with a "are you ok with him going home" poll.  I think he might already know the answer to that.

Morning!

Well that was anticlimactic last night.....finally!  People keep talking about what a great person CJ is and he certainly(from what we've seen on tv)seems to be.  But how is being a great person one of the criteria for winning a singing contest?  Maybe Idol could let CJ take over from Randy.  He'd probably do a better job.

@Rickster_  um, 7 posts before yours.  Plus I commented today on a couple of previous posts.

But yes, it has certainly taken a toll.

It is a Pharrel Williams produced and backed track, feels very Justin Timberlake.

Scotty and Phil can sing. Lee can sing sometimes. CJ couldn't sing!

@Sam-A1 News reports are that the "All Clear" signal is being given. No gun found.

Rest easy, Sam.

@HarveyPooka  if you don't care about it there is a simple solution......don't watch the show and stay off the blog, jacka$$.......you wont find me on a "Best housewives of whereever" blog, because I don't give a crap about it....

@HarveyPooka You go, dude. Definitely in the running for biggest snark fail of the day. ...But it's early so someone could still beat you out.

@BigAintheBigA I agree with that.   I might swap Alex with Jena.  Alex has the ability to win it all IMO, if he can put it together right.    He's a bit of a wildcard in that he's played the versatile talented artist and it's kept him alive with very dedicated fans.   Towards the end, he could go more mainstream and really deliver some home run performances to gain momementum and win it all.   I don't know if he will, but I could see it happening.

DeirdreC
DeirdreC

@BigAintheBigA  Keep in mind that Jessica Sanchez was saved during her season and came in second to Philx2.  Sam is still a major contender, especially if he keeps improving.

@Tomika Dani I wouldn't necessarily call it boring, but there haven't been a lot of stellar moments.

@DeirdreC

I'm calling foul on you for this one.  You're the main one that has preached for years that Idol is more than a singing competition.

G_

@DeirdreC

If it's true that CJ can't sing, then who's fault is it, that he made it to the top 13?  Maybe we've been giving the judges too much credit for this "lack luster" season of talent (outside of Caleb, of course).

CJ has never been one of my favorites, but I wouldn't go as far to say he can't sing.  He's a coachable talent, and just needs some consistent training.  Someone who can't sing (such as myself), cannot be coached to sing regardless of training time.

OnlyNutmeg
OnlyNutmeg

@DeirdreC CJ could also sing sometimes. *When* he had the right song and *when* he was in pitch--and the congruence of the two was increasingly rare--he was amazing.  It was definitely his time to go, of course.  But the iTunes cover of Free Fallin' he did was, IMO, the best recording of the season.

Lee was as pitchy as CJ during his season (and shouldn't have won, of course).

Rickster_
Rickster_

@DeirdreC I didn't say they couldn't sing. I just agreed that they "had virtually no versatility."

They all pretty much sang each song the same way - especially PP.

DeirdreC
DeirdreC

It's a lot more than just a singing contest but singing is a requirement so if a singer can't stay on pitch consistently why is that person even in the roster. For example, I say Philx2 is a singer. You don't agree because you don't like his voice. Liking his voice and whether he can sing or not is two different things. CJ could not sing.

DeirdreC

@RodneyHo @DeirdreC @Rickster_  We're the handful of daytime survivors.  The night crew is alive and well.  You usually end up with over 500 posts for a 2 hour show.  Not bad.

DeirdreC
DeirdreC

@G_ @DeirdreC  Agree and Jennifer even said during the prelims that he was doing a bunch of things wrong but they felt like he could be mentored out of them.  Not with the current mentor obviously but that still makes you wonder why he was chosen.  Wasn't he a wild card pick?

DeirdreC
DeirdreC

@OnlyNutmeg @DeirdreC  Good to hear from you again, Nutmeg.  I agree that every now and then CJ hit a home run and he hit a lot more of them before the final 13 was chosen than after which explains why the judges picked him.  I'm not sure whether the large audience threw him off or he started trying way too hard and that's what threw him off but he definitely wasn't the same CJ after the prelims that he was during.
