Oooh! A twist!

The producers for the first time ever gave the singers two options: keep everyone this week and do a double elimination next week. Or just get rid of someone now. For it to work, they needed a unanimous decision. The vote would be anonymous.

The “we’re one big happy family” vibe implied they might all go for the “let’s delay the results til next week” choice.

But instead, two (anonymous) contestants decided to have the lowest vote getter go immediately.

This led to Sam Woolf departing “Idol” — again. (He was saved there weeks ago). I think he did earn his save, improving noticeably the past three weeks. He certainly is not a great performer yet but he has potential.

I predicted Alex would be a surprise departure. I was wrong. I did predict Sam in the bottom two but that drops my track record to 7 out of 10 this season.

Sam early on was considered a favorite to win by a lot of us. I placed him at No. 1 when we were in the top 13. But quickly, it became apparent he was too green for the live shows. While he has a lovely voice, he had trouble connecting with the songs he sang and with the audience. He looked uncomfortable and he lacked dynamics in his singing. He’d tend to hit one level and stay there – a problem he was never able to shake, even as he loosened up on stage.

Still, he’s a nice kid. I’m not sure if he has a career ahead of him but he didn’t embarrass himself.

We are now wondering: who voted no? Caleb Johnson probably did. He wants to win. He needs to get rid of folks one by one. I bet Jena Irene did, too. She seems to be sending off that arrogant it’s-all-about-me vibe. Sam I’m certain voted yes because he knew he was in trouble. Ditto with Jessica Meuse. I bet Alex Preston voted no. He just seems like a good guy that way.

I wonder how Sam’s departure will impact voting for the final four. Will Jena or Alex draw some of his support?

@McCovey44- I am SO right with you on your post below (3rd one down?)  Caleb is my pick too, but I'd also be fine with either girl winning.  I never have understood all the venom towards Jena, and I never have really cared for Alex (though I admit he does have a good voice and "knows his craft".)

In reading around the net, I don't think many (if any) bloggers liked the twist.  Most seem to regard it as a silly (and rather cruel to the contestants) stunt.

But the funniest quote I read was from Jessica.  She said they felt like they were in the Hunger Games, and were getting ready to pull out the nightlock berries.  :-)

Good for Alex and Jena for keeping the show on track as it should be.  :-)

Happy weekend, all!

Had to post some quotes from Michael Slezak's blog! He didn't care for "the twist":

"Here's how it was supposed to play out:

"A Ford ad with the contestants all looking more stylish and relaxed than they do on stage.

"A perfectly inoffensive performance from Keith Urban.

"Randy Jackson imitating one of the adults in the Peanut cartoons.

"Either Sam, Caleb, Alex, Jessica or Jena experiencing his or her personal 'Red Wedding' - without approximately 97% less bloodshed and 22% more crying

"Safe or eliminated, a shank-eyed stare from JLo towards Jessica Meuse - just because."

After the "twist":

"Would we have gone through all this ridiculousness had Jessica been the lowest vote-getter?"

Like many of us, Slezak doesn't care for the judges' constant harping on Jessica:

"...somehow, I suspect Uncle PB will leak to TMZ that the entire outcome tonight was Jessica's fault. D- it,

they're just determined to make sure she doesn't get her hometown visit to Slapout, AL, aren't they?"

Question: Where was Sam's journey video that should have been shown at the end of the show? Did they run out of time or possibly one hadn't been prepared?

If, six weeks ago, I could have picked my Top Three it would have been Caleb, Jena, Jessica.  So I guess I'm in pretty good company.  I never have, and never will, get Alex but almost every year there is one about whom I say, "What?  Who?"  If the people who post here had their way Jena would not only be eliminated but banished to a faraway island without food or water as well.  Someone is voting for her, though.  Caleb is my guy.  I would be okay if either of the two girls won.

Coming to you from Dallas. So it was Alex and Jena. I don't care why they voted no, I'm just happy that they did. Good for both of them!

Re Jena haters. I really hate when someone calls me a hater. I don't hate Jena. I'm annoyed that she screams almost every song she sings. I do like that she has made an effort the last two weeks to not do that. I am also not fond of her voice. It's weird to me. I do not care about her personality. She wants to win. That's a good thing. She's too confident??? What's wrong with confidence. She's arrogant ??? I'd be arrogant too if I was in her position. It takes a strong personality to survive the whims of the public.

All that being said, she is not my favorite singer on the show and I am not voting for her.

Quote from Deirdre:  "Look at it this way, with Sam the Heartthrob gone (and probably a lot of the tweens with him) Idol can now allow the contestants to sing older songs."

Good lord. Is THAT why they've been foisting all this crappy music on us??  Really?

I'm still struggling to understand just WHY they think the tweenies are so all-important.  Don't they realize which age group spends the money?  (Hint:  It's not the tweenies.)

Jenny11

And as far as Jena and Alex being the dissenters, well, I don't blame them a bit.  Back in the days when the show was at its best, they played it straight up.  The person who was voted out went home, end of story.  That in itself created enough buzz the next day.  They didn't need any hokey "judges' saves" or silly gimmicks to create fake animosity.

I think the "twist" smacks of desperation... they're trying to create drama because the show isn't on the radar like it used to be.  Sad.  These kids have enough pressure... no need to create more for them.  :-(

@RoseUp, I loved your comment "The complete elimination of older songs means the music sucks, big time."  Don't know if you've been reading, but I've been preaching that for weeks!

Though the singers themselves were good on Wednesday, some of the music was... um... well, if I can't say something nice, I won't say anything at all.  ;-)

Sam might've fared a lot better with, I don't know, an old classic like "Drift Away"... or an 80's song in his wheelhouse, like "West End Girls"... or any of the multitude of songs that were suggested for him here on this blog when Rodney announced the "tweet-your-requests" theme.

Afternoon, all.  @DeirdreC , thanks for the updates on the blog last night!  I couldn't reply, but was reading. :-)

@Sam-A1- I am with you in hoping for a Caleb & Jessica finale.  Though I also like Jena and really hope she'll come in 3rd.  I guess I'm not seeing the things about her that everyone seems to hate.  She just seems like a great singer who's trying to win.  But I do FF a lot, so maybe I'm missing something?

I'm also very happy that at this stage, we have 4 strong talents.  Just like last year!!  :-)  THANK YOU , Idol, for finally limiting the voting.  Finally.

Unanimous or a majority vote....THERE IS A DIFFERENCE!

KokoSnoot

I believe that Jessica only voted Yes because she thought she was out. Sam & Caleb voted Yes to "keep the family together". I believe Jena voted No, well because she's JENA and thinks she is numero uno. I think Alex voted No because he thought the ploy was ridiculous, and likely thought Jessica was to be eliminated.

I think the way they toyed with Sam all season was really crappy. I truly believe he was over it and tired of the attention on his supposed Heartthrob status opposed to his musical talents/abilities. To attempt to save him twice was a jerk move, they simply wanted him for the ratings.

If/when Sam does release an album of originals, I think it will be great.

UW: I for one don't "hate" jena, just don't like her personality, and she's started lately screaming her songs much of the time. I did like her at first, but don't like the changes I have seen from the early shows.

Though I didn't like her singing at all and still don't, the same for Jen Hudson - she had a really snarky personality, talked back to the judges and snarled all the time - didn't like her attitude either. Jena doesn't "snarl" but she just seems to have a "superiority complex" the last few weeks.

UWreckMeBaby
UWreckMeBaby

Don't understand Jena haters. Jena is a musician, has stage presence, great vocal range and control, and is consistent!  A well rounded performer at age 17. Its fine if you don't like her, but you should respect her talent. She is 2nd only to Caleb, the obvious winner, IMHO.

Pitchy1

I hope Caleb wins.  Haven't been able to watch these past few weeks so it's good to see he's still in the running and Sam the Man is unfortunately going home.

Sam-A1

I hope the final 2 are Caleb and Jessica, with Alex next in line to Jessica. I would dearly hate to see Jena win - funny, I liked her in the beginning, but just don't  like her at all any more. Her facial expressions speak volumes about her smug attitude. I'm pretty sure if asked, she'd admit she will win, and the way the judges are heading, looks like they're trying to pull that off.

For my top 13 picks I had 1) Caleb 4) Jessica 9) Alex and 10) Jena.

I did a lot better last year when everything was easily predictable from the start.

RoseUp

I finally quit watching. I missed the show this week. I'd been watching since the beginning of Season 2. Without Simon, the judges try to be too nice. The complete elimination of older songs means the music sucks, big time. And for the second straight season, the contestants were God awful. I picked a good week to quit because I actually liked Sam. Alex is okay. Caleb is the only one who deserves to win. Jessica is gross and Gena makes my skin crawl! I don't get what anybody sees in her at all! This will probably be my last post. Goodbye, y'all. It used to be fun.

I just read that it was Alex and Jena who voted NO. I figured it would come out and now that it has it may bite them in the backside from Sam fans who also voted for them. LOL

First of all, I'm shocked that my pick to win (Sam) is gone.  Maybe Caleb will be the first rocker to win it all....at least I hope so.

I think RoHo is a tad bit off with who voted NO out of the group.  I think that Jessica Meuse led the charge.  If you remember her throughout the audition period, she couldn't get along with anybody.  She was selfish, self-centered, and wanted to be a loner.  She absolutely loathed group sessions and performances.  With that said, Jessica was the leader of the NO club, and persuaded others.  She's got a lot of people fooled.

I loved the tender love story between Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst in the previous "Spidey" trilogy.  There IS a nice chemistry between Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone in "Amazing Spider-Man 2" (they are real-life sweethearts), but the actors are way too old to play teenagers.  Garfield will be 31 in a few months; Stone 27.

Dressing Stone "young" by putting her in knee socks... really?

MercedesS
MercedesS

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" follows the formula for comic book movies. Starts with a "humorous" take-down of an angry villain, always involving lots of police cars flying into the air and/or crashing into other police cars; unearths plot by evil corporation (government run or not) that needs to be infiltrated and taken down; super-monster-mega-villain needs to be defeated in 20 minute long 3-D struggle; and every now and then, the hero,, who may have super powers but battles juvenile angst issues, is mean to mother substitute or girlfriend.

Ahem... Rodney, you have listed three no-votes.

Good Morning, everybody.

Ya know, Sam very well could of voted no himself.   He probably knows he doesnt have the showmanship to win.   Maybe he was ready to just take his medicine?   Who knows.   The whole thing seemed really gimicky to me, and frankly unecessary.

So... Idol meets Survivor? Who gets voted off this week? What? No challenges and immunity idols?

jnewlin

I am disappointed with the AI producers putting the contestants in the situation of voting whether someone went home or not. I'm glad there were two contestants brave enough to vote to keep the contest going on the way it's set up to be...and that is sending someone home each week.  This situation also causes me to wonder if the producers (knowing Sam was going home) came up with this idea to save him a second time. Sam going home may have been the best thing for him. I don't believe Sam wanted to be the "heartthrob" that the producers and judges were trying to make him become.

Sam-A1
Sam-A1

Sadly, I dozed off for 10 minutes and missed the end of the show. I was surprised to see here that 2 actually  voted no - and I'm really sure Miss "I'm so special" Jena was one of the nos. And very likely Caleb as well, though he really seems to like and support all the others. The judges has worked overtime to pump up Jena to us and to herself - her face says it all - "I'm already the winner". GO CALEB!

With only 4 contestants remaining I hope AI doesn't come up with another gimmick.

DeirdreC

Here's more food for thought.  We don't know(quite clever on Idol's part) who else was near the bottom of the voting.  My guess is that fans of whoever it was will not be rallied to "save" their singer.  Next week's vote, whatever the order(and we may not find out), will be the order of finish after the finale.

Glad he is gone! Should never had been in top 10!

Not that it matters, but I think it's more likely that Sam and Jena voted "No" to this little producers' trick. Sam because he would have figured he was toast, never really generating the voting base that he needed, and Jena because she would just want to get rid of another competitor. (Big ego but little self-esteem - which is a fairly common combination!)

I don't think Caleb is full of himself as someone said. To me, it looks like he's just having as much fun as he can in the time allotted. But I do think he's confident enough in himself and his standing not to worry whether another tag-along was kept for another week!

DeirdreC
DeirdreC

Look at it this way, with Sam the Heartthrob gone(and probably a lot of the tweens with him) Idol can now allow the contestants to sing older songs.  Either that or Idol will throw itself off a bridge by having the remaining contestants sing only tween-favored music.

And re: Sam, it wasn't his Fray song I was referring to above that did him in.  It was that other dreck that "America" gave him.

@UWreckMeBaby

If people truly hate GenaJeanaGinaJena I don't believe it's because of her talent.  I think the smug attitude is driving people away.

Personally, her voice has a nice quality to it but for the life of my I cannot distinguish the words she is singing.  It's as though she takes 5 or 6 words, runs them together, and the result is an unintelligible 9 or 10 syllable word.
