‘American Idol’ briefs: Caleb Johnson insults social media fans; Clay Aiken vs. Stephen Colbert; who voted no to the twist?

Sheesh. If this were season five or seven or even 10, front runner Caleb Johnson’s comments Thursday night would have created a firestorm.

He told After Buzz TV how he felt about fans suggesting songs for him – which “American Idol” actually requested from fans, using a term that is no longer remotely politically correct:

“Yeah. It gives access to a bunch of retards to talk to me. I don’t really enjoy having to see somebody telling me what song I have to sing…at this point of the competition I can pick and choose my own songs…I don’t need 10,000 people saying ‘You should sing this, you should sing that, listen to me.’”

Here, he looked at the camera and said, “Fortunately guys, I’m going to listen to myself, whether you like it or not.”

Huh? We already have a clue that he isn’t exactly the most PC guy. On air, he said “Faithfully” would “make the old ladies cry,” which some “old ladies” who follow the show didn’t appreciate.

You have to wonder if this will affect his voting contingent in any tangible way. Probably not since nobody outside the hardcore remaining viewers seems to care what is going on this year with “Idol.”

***
And just look at this. Ratings Thursday hit another series low: 6.92 million viewers and a mere 1.5 18-49 rating. “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” gets higher 18-49 ratings. The show wouldn’t even make the top 25 among broadcast shows during the week.

***
Clay Aiken, running for Congress in North Carolina as an underdog Democrat, parried with Stephen Colbert Thursday. He holds up well.

***

I did guess correctly that Jena Irene voted no when asked to not eliminate anybody Thursday. This was the producers’ manipulative attempt to keep Sam Woolf around.

But Alex Preston was the other one who chose to keep the vote normal, not Caleb. None of the finalists liked the gimmick, which was thrown at them at the last second.

“I didn’t like it at all,” Jena Irene said. “We have a lot of stress on Thursdays already. To make a decision–it’s just added stress that’s not needed. I didn’t like it at all!”

“When I have to make decisions on the spot, which I’m not prepared for, I have to do what’s right for me,” Jena declared. “At the end of the day it’s a competition.”

“I think the idea was really dumb,” said Alex Preston. “It’s just double the s**tiness.” He thought everyone would say no.

“It was unnecessary and stupid,” said Caleb. “It was just for the shock value.” In retrospect, he said he would have voted no also. He also as given a whopping three songs to choose from this past week so had no choice but take that turd of a song by Aerosmith.

The least upset was Jessica Meuse, who compared it to “Hunger Games.”

Morning!

Well, Idol has a genuine controversy involving a frontrunner.  Will people leave in droves now or tune in to see what all the fuss is about?  Since there are times when we have over 400 "listeners", I think there are a lot of people not watching but still curious.

It makes you wonder.  Caleb wants to front a rock band.  Rock bands get notoriety from being outrageous and making folks wonder what's going to come out of their mouths next.  Did he say something he didn't mean to say or was he laying the groundwork for his future?  I have half a prediction.  Some folks are saying that Caleb gets kicked as a result of his comments.  If that's true he will be gone this week.  If he survives this week he still wins.

For next week Caleb should sing "Rico Suave" and "I'm too sexy". It doesn't need to fit a theme, Caleb is too good for themes.

Back from Dallas and signing on to let you all in on this week's top 4 theme.  Breakups/Makeups.  Discuss.

Fox will replace this show next year with ... America humming = People that can hum music! ... This show is so dead!

I did not think this show could get any worse? I was wrong! I just checked TV ratings and this show had it's worst ratings night ever! This show was on life support this year and the patient has now died!

Oops... just listened to the Caleb interview... didn't care for his "The girls, the hookers, the cocaine" comment either. He comes across as rather stupid.

Clay did very well - thanks for posting, Rodney.

I wonder if he's diabetic or something. He seemed cranky all this past week. Bet you money he makes a big make nice on air this week. All that aside I see Alex edging closer to the lead. I'll be flabbergasted if JenaGinaJeanna wins.

I don't like any of the Real Housewives show. I think I'll search out a website with blog entries about the show and make posts about why the show should be canceled.

Doesn't make any sense, but it makes for good trolling I guess.

This show is just to boring now to watch ---> Fire the Judges ---> get rid of these karaoke singers --> Ask Carrie Underwood to come back for the remainder of the show and sing show tunes would be more entertaining ---> Ask Miley Cyrus to twerk the audience? ---> Have the audience throw up on Lady Gaga? ---> anything would be better then what American Idol is giving us now ZzZzZzZzZ  ---> Thursday nights ratings was the worst ever at 1.5 = no one is watching this train wreak  --> "Big Bang Theory" had a 4.4 rating!!

North Carolina has many young people on American Idol, some very well and some not so well.  I am going to put Caleb Johnson the not so well column, which I HATE, I was pulling for you.  After those comments I can't,  those remarks are as bad as bullying that we are trying to teach our children will not be tolerated.  Whether you like it or not someone in life will always be telling what to do.  I can't a record label wanting to sign someone that they are going to have to worry what will come out of his mouth every time he is interviewed.  MAKE THE FANS MAD and that will equal into no sales of CD's and concert tickets.  Better rethink you attitude.

This show is so dead ... Just cancel ... Thursday night ratings were the worst ever!

American Idol tumbled to a series low 1.5 rating ... only 6.92m people watched at 9pm!!

Hell's Kitchen had a 1.6 rating beating Idol :)~

It seems that Caleb has issued an apology via Facebook, as follows (from Yahoo Music News):

"For the record that juvenile comment I made in the interview was not directed towards my fans but to the wackos that send hundreds of hate messages a day to me! You guys are amazing and I cannot thank you enough for your support. Sorry if it offended anybody it was the wrong choice of words. Also I greatly appreciate it when you guys give me song suggestions but it gets really overwhelming at the volume it comes in so please understand ! Rock on !:)"

DeirdreC

Caleb honey, you just totally blew it.

OK everyone. Caleb is not going to win. Who will take the winners spot? Top 2 will be Alex and Jena with Alex winning. I think. Caleb will be eliminated this week. What an idiot!

JTesla
JTesla

What a dummy. Look at the recent big name stars, they've been embracing their fans over social media, and it's made them fame and fortune. I'm in the camp that now hopes that Caleb fails, and fails hard. Stick to making fun of people with peanut allergies, at least you can fake an apology for that.

Wow!  After listening to this guy, I just can't even respond the way I really want to, without simply losing it.  That is how angry and disgusted I am. I will leave it at that until I calm down.  Disgraceful, rude, arrogant...............omg!

RodneyHo

@DeirdreC Arrogance costs votes. But it will be interesting to see if this really affects him, especially if "Idol" chooses to ignore it on the live show. Do you think they will have him apologize for it on air for something he did off air?

DeirdreC
DeirdreC

@McCovey44  I don't think he's making a conscious effort to be shocking.  I think that's just the way he talks.

PatriciaFinelli

@JTesla   Maybe it would be fitting if he learned to sing "Time To Say Goodbye" by the great  Andrea Bocelli, lol.  That would really be more fitting, don't you think?

JTesla

@DeirdreC I heard that from Caleb, just before he threw all his fans under the bus, drove over them, threw the bus in reverse and drove over them again.

@LisaJones34 The UK canceled American Idol 1/2 way through the show. With only a few more weeks to go I am sure this will be the last of American Idol with ratings that are in the toilet as few people watch the show now ( me included )

@BigAintheBigA  with he is fat and comes across as Lazy. Still if you have medical issues then you have to learn to live with them. What did they say on Animal House "Fat and Stupid is no way to go through life son!"

@willisben32.  Actually I think the show would be more interesting if they bring back Underwood, Daughtry, and other past idols who became successful as judges and dumb these narcissistic and histrionic judges.

DeirdreC

The apology may keep him in another week. I don't see him winning now. If it was just that comment(which certainly ranks as his worst so far)maybe I'd give him a pass. After all, he's new to the media and his efforts to sound like a "cool" guy might be forgiven IF he hadn't messed up already. Peanut allergy people and old ladies are not feeling too friendly toward him. He disregards the impact that his words have and has made no adjustments. If he hasn't learn by now that the media is his friend only as long as he watches what comes out of his mouth, he's never going to learn.

JTesla
JTesla

1) He obviously wasn't talking about haters, he addressed his "retards" comment to fans suggesting songs. So Caleb is a liar.

2) I'm not a fan of non-apology apologies. "Sorry if it offended anybody..." well you don't get to be in charge of other peoples level of being offended. Apologize for what you said, don't apologize that people got offended at your comment. Try again, liar.

3) He does not appreciate it when people give him song suggestions, he said as much in the interview even without the "retards" word.

@DeirdreC Caleb certainly did blow it! I'm not buying his damage control attempt either. I still believe Jessica has the most talent and is certainly the most professional of the top 4. I believe the top 2 will be Jessica and Alex now.

JTesla
JTesla

@DeirdreC I'm not willing to say that he won't win, I don't know that American cares enough. I will say that he shouldn't win.

RodneyHo

@PatriciaFinelli Most "Idol" winners lack that type of "attitude. Notice Jennifer Hudson and Daughtry, while successful, didn't get the votes. Fantasia and Taylor Hicks those respective years had humble vulnerability (in the case of Fantasia) or humble sweetness (in the case of Fantasia). Look at other past winners, too: Phillip Phillips may have not liked a lot of the stupidity of the show (like some of the themes and the group sings) but he never conveyed them in such an obnoxious way. Scotty McCreery? Truly humble. Even Lee DeWyze carried himself in a way that didn't make you think arrogant. David Cook? Smart, not arrogant. Kris Allen. The king of humble. Ditto with Kelly and Carrie and Ruben and Jordin.

@RodneyHo @DeirdreC  damage is done and I have to believe sponsors are looking cross eyed at Caleb. They have to be thinking we need to cut this guy lose or dip into lower ratings.

PatriciaFinelli
PatriciaFinelli

@RodneyHo @DeirdreC  I was thinking the same thing.  Maybe it would be best to ignore this scenario - on air. The damage is already done.  As egregious as his behavior is, I feel sorry for the rest of the contestants. I do not think he has a chance to win at this point; however, stranger things have happened.  We will just have to wait and see.

jnewlin
jnewlin

@RodneyHo @DeirdreCI don't think AI will even mention it this Wednesday. I do believe his fans feel betrayed and his "apology" wasn't an apology at all.

jnewlin
jnewlin

@DeirdreC @McCovey44I agree with @Deidre. I believe Caleb said what he meant without providing any filter. Maybe a previous visit to the Bottom 2 or 3 may have done him some good.

jnewlin
jnewlin

@DeirdreC That particular interview was packed full of derogatory remarks and displayed a disrespectful attitude. Has success on American Idol gone to his head? I'm not buying his apology.

JTesla
JTesla

@DeirdreC Agreed. Although, I feel more insulted by his apology now. His original comment really was directed at people suggesting songs... suggestions put forth by his fans. Time for me to start voting up Jessica and Alex.

MercedesS

@JTesla "Sorry if I offended anybody" is the most useless of useless excuses.  What it means: "Sorry I got caught."

RodneyHo
RodneyHo moderator

@JTesla @DeirdreCI'm not sure if the average voting person knows anything this. If this were season 5, his comments would be all over the Twitterverse Donald Sterling style. So he might just get away with it.

PatriciaFinelli

@RodneyHo @PatriciaFinelli  Good post Rodney!  So very true. It is such a shame that this had to happen.  I always believed that most of the time, things happen for the best in the long run. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.  I know that I certainly would not want to be in Caleb's shoes at this point in time!

@DeirdreC You should watch it, his attitude is worth seeing.
