‘American Idol’ top 4 results recap

There would be no Daughtry-like shock departure tonight.

Instead, it was a consensus departure this week with Jessica Meuse, who inexplicably thought she was a pure pop star last night with songs by Pink, Lady Gaga and Kelly Clarkson. Who told her to do that? She’s more a bluesy country singer.

Her strength was a strong, unique voice but for many weeks, she possessed a vacant look in her eyes and terrible rhythmic movement below the waist. She did improve in recent weeks and was finding her groove but simply faced three strong contestants she couldn’t outlast. She was our very own wounded robin, especially in Hollywood but her mood seemed to lift the more time she lasted on the show.

Too bad she won’t get a hometown visit. We’ll never get to see what Slapout, Ala. is all about!

Alex Preston found himself in the bottom two for the first time, leaving Caleb as the remaining contestant who has never been a bottom dweller. (That “retard” comment Caleb more sincerely apologized for this week? It came and went like a temporary cough, a sign that “Idol’ is now way off the pop culture radar screen. I bet most Caleb fans had no clue what had happened. Can you imagine if Bo Bice or Taylor Hicks or David Cook had said something like that? Those were the days…)

It seems now that a Jena/Caleb finale is the likeliest scenario. But who will win?

Alex, by the way, is the most successful singer ever to come from New England, which has had a dismal track record on the show over 13 years.  Seriously, I can’t think of a notable contestant to ever hail from any of the six states that encompass that area until now.

Re-posted from the last Idol thread:  If (Fox president Kevin) Reilly were successful in getting Simon to come back it would only be because Simon's ego would lead Simon to believe he could single-handedly turn the ratings around. ...Then, halfway through the live shows when he sees that isn't happening, he'd go back into the auto-pilot mode he was in during his last season on Idol.

Talk about the ridiculous, Caleb's hometown planned for his concert to be at a venue that only holds 208 people. Are you serious? And...."only an estimated 100 would be allowed into the club." Wow, that is just plain wrong.

Deirdre - was able to see link and read/watch interviews with Ms. Meuse. Thanks.

Now, I shall go quietly away and not mention Jess again until I take a trip to Slapout, AL. You all enjoy the final three...I think Caleb should win, but don't really care at this point.

Thnks, Deordre, for link to interview with Jessica.  I think she did very well.  And we didn't even know about the break-up with b-f.  That must have been extra stressful. She handled herself with grace and tact. Glad she got a chance to talk about the rhymes with witch woman who was so mean to her.

The link to the interview is posted in the comment just above the post with the quotation from the interview.

Waiting for the link to that interview.  I perused a lot of info on the web yesterday about Jess but didn't see that one.

As for me, when she says "pretty much" I am taking it to mean a couple had to switch. Find it hard to believe that "Idol" would quash whatever Jena or Alex wanted to perform.  Could be wrong, but that's what I feel.

Thanks for the conversation, Idolfan.  It's rare to get more than one person on here at the same time on the weekend.

A few years ago, early in the Adam Lambert season, an "American Idol staffer" stated that AI was fixed and she could prove it.  She said that the top 4 had already been decided and they would be Lil Rounds, Adam Lambert, Danny Gokey and Alexis Grace.  The top 4 were actually Alison Irraheta, Danny Gokey, Adam Lambert and Kris Allen.  She got two right and frankly, they were easy guesses.  She wanted attention and got it from the conspiracy lovers. But basically she lied through her teeth!

I think the most interesting part of that interview was the fact that Idol started out wanting them all to do original songs.  It's possible that a couple of the original songs were boring or really bad and Idol felt that it would be unfair to whoever wrote a crappy song.  Or maybe the producer(who had already spoken about Idol being popular because of the cover songs) felt like he was going to lose more ratings because of the original songs.  Who knows why it happened, but they all got a hammer dropped on them a couple of days before the show aired.

Did anyone go back and listen to how they announced the "bottom two?" I ask because as pointed out in the article there's assumption it was Alex. But of course we all know they have played with their wording before. Now if the "votes" really matter (which I have BIG DOUBTS) then placing Alex in that position rallies his fans and leaves the fans of the others misguided thinking their favorite might not need their support as much as they might really and there's less of a push for that contestant.

Morning!

OK, NEG!  I've got a bone to pick with you.  Are you a politician skilled at leaving out important facts? ;-) Here's the interview with Jessica that talks about a "last minute" song switch:

Is there a reason why information about the third song was withheld from fans and even TV Line, who posted the spoilers? “I really don’t know why it was withheld. I didn’t know it was. We were aware of the three songs ahead of time. It was originally going to be originals, because we are all songwriters in the Top 4.”

All four of the contestants had practiced original songs during the week?“The “So What” song was a last minute switcheroo and I had to learn it in like a day.”

All four contestants were going to perform an original song, and then at the last minute, they told all four ‘No, you can’t do an original song, you have to pick another one? “Yes.”

All four had to switch their songs on Monday? “Pretty much. The day of rehearsal we made the cut for that third song.”

They didn’t tell you why they were switching it, just that it was happening? ”No. There were just like ‘There’s a change, you have to do this.’”

At that point, were you just presented with songs–took what you could get? ”Yeah. Pretty much. The lyrics of ‘So What’ I liked them. And I love Pink. She’s really awesome. I went with it.”

As you can see, it wasn't just Jessica getting picked on.  All four contestants had their songs switched on Monday.  The rest of the interview is interesting and I will link it for those of you who peek in on a Sat.

@Idolfan  First of all there was NO concert.  They had the parade and then Caleb performed a few songs at 2 clubs in his hometown, The Orange Peel, following the parade and the Emerald Lounge Saturday night.

@Idolfan Maybe those are all the people left after Caleb offended so many non-perfect fans (us retarded/allergy-prone/old bags over 40)? Will people in wheel chairs or with canes be asked to remove themselves from the crowd of parade onlookers?

@MercedesS  No problem, Mercedes.  I was surprised to read that she'd split with her bf too.  What a time to have that happen!

@DeirdreC  If this post twice, sorry tried to edit and now it's gone. Anyway, Jessica was allowed to perform an original weeks, "Blue-Eyed Lie" (or what ever the title) and it was one of her best performances. I have only heard that Alex and Jessica write and perform originals, so it's quite possible you're right about two not being good enough to continue towards the results the producers are after.

DeirdreC
DeirdreC

@Idolfan  Absolutely agree that Idol plays games.  It's part of its "charm".  And conspiracy theories are lots of fun but can also play games with your mind.  Idol can manipulate us(and does) but aren't we taking it for granted that the rest of the voters are stupid enough to fall for it even if we're not?

Voting is absolutely on the level or the FCC would have hauled Idol's azz off the air years ago.  These shows are monitored carefully and any hint of voting fraud would be investigated thoroughly.

Idolfan
Idolfan

@DeirdreC  What do you think this really means when she say's All four PRETTY MUCH. "All four had to switch their songs on Monday? “Pretty much. The day of rehearsal we made the cut for that third song.”

Idolfan
Idolfan

@Taminator49 @Idolfan  You're right, bad choice of word using concert. In the past the Idols homecoming isn't in a place that only houses 208 people. That's my point. i went to Lee's in Arlington Heights at the Race Track and there were THOUSANDS of people. It just seemed like really poor planning to pick such a tiny place, where by reports only 100 random people were going to be allowed in.

Idolfan
Idolfan

@MercedesS @Idolfan  Doubtful that the town only planned an arena that holds 208 for that reason. Plus, I personally don't think a person should only be allowed to say something dumb once in their lifetime. What's most important is whether or not that person has learned from their mistakes.

wreckedpizza

@JTesla @wreckedpizza  From above: Could be wrong . . .

Or, Jess may have answered "yes" to keep from pissing off "Idol" producers.  She still has the finale and tour to do, y'know.

MercedesS
MercedesS

@Idolfan @DeirdreC "two not being good enough" - sounds like that might have been originals by Caleb and Jena, the jduges' two favorites. We couldn't have that.

Idolfan
Idolfan

@DeirdreC @Idolfan  I read an article years ago that the FCC doesn't consider it a game show type of program and therefore just considers it a show for entertainment and doesn't regulate it. I could go on and on with regards to what has brought me to the conclusion our votes mean squat but I won't. I will add, the fact there's a disclaimer at the end of the show about the producers is all that really needs to be pointed out.

DeirdreC
DeirdreC

@Idolfan @DeirdreC  I think she likes "pretty much" as a synonym for yes.  Or it could mean that some got their song changes early in the day and some late. Or maybe one got his/hers on Tuesday.  Point is...they ALL had to change songs.  It wasn't just the powers that be picking on Jessica as it was suggested.

Taminator49
Taminator49

@Idolfan @Taminator49  Yeah not sure why they selected 2 clubs/bars for Caleb's after-parade party. Jena's was held at the football stadium of her high school and Alex's was held at one of the concert halls at the University of New Hampshire.

DeirdreC
DeirdreC

@wreckedpizza @DeirdreC  First, I never said anything about you being wrong.  I took what Jessica said to be the truth.  I don't think she's the kind of girl who would kowtow to the Idol producers.  Maybe I'm wrong, maybe she is.

And I posted the link for you again.  I hope you can see it.  It is right under your "Don't see it. Thanks anyway " comment and Idolfan's link to the producer interview.  I hope you can read it.  If not go to mjsbigblog and scroll down(you may have to go to the next page).  Her interview is very upbeat.  I think you will enjoy it.

@DeirdreC @wreckedpizza  The "told" post was in reply to your post that all 4 were supposed to sing originals. You asked (and answered) had any sung an original song. So, you told me I was wrong for thinking that Alex or Jena could have sung an original tune had they wanted, That's all.

DeirdreC
DeirdreC

@wreckedpizza @DeirdreC  Told what?  You keep forgetting that I was a fan of Jessica too.  I really liked her and am disappointed that she didn't make the top 3.  I would have loved an Alex, Jessica, Caleb sing off next week.

She had flaws.  So does Caleb and Alex and Jena.  In the end, we had the absolute correct top 4.  Sometimes we can't help it if our favorite doesn't have enough votes.

Sometimes the judges are too harsh. However, the people who didn't like Jessica saw the judges as fair and correct in their criticisms...so who's right here?  Us because we liked Jessica?  Or them because they didn't?

Fact is, we're both right because who we like best as a singer is a subjective thing.  We get connected to a singer and get insulted when someone tells us we're wrong to feel that way.  It certainly happens to me a lot around here, not that anyone seems to notice.

I'm not a fan of conspiracy theories. I tend to try to debunk them. I fell into the conspiracy theory trap when Michael Johns was eliminated because he was MY muse. ;-) But other people debunked my theories because, in the end, it just didn't matter.

wreckedpizza

@DeirdreC @wreckedpizza  No, I didn't say they would keep her from either.  But they could reduce her time of participation to minimal. Like they did with Lazaro last season. He was barely a part of the finale as I recall.

DeirdreC
DeirdreC

@wreckedpizza  Do you honestly think they would keep her from the finale and the tour just because she said she had to change songs at the last minute?  How many Idols have told reporters about last minute song changes?  It's a pretty common thing.  Remember Lazaro whining about having to learn his song overnight?

DeirdreC
DeirdreC

The plan was to have each Idol sing an original song.  Did any Idol sing an original song?  No.  So they all had to switch songs.

Idolfan
Idolfan

@DeirdreC @Idolfan  Just basing it on conversations I've had with other American Idol fans in the past. I should have said, the people that I know that vote TEND to be stupid enough to fall for it.

Idolfan
Idolfan

@DeirdreC  Also, I do think the voters are stupid enough to fall for it.

@DeirdreC @Idolfan  Gotcha. Just wondering what you thought about that line. I did notice she said, "PRETTY MUCH" more than once.
