Who makes the finals on ‘American Idol’?

Alex Preston, the quirky band geez with the strange stomping motion while he played guitar, just missed the finals.

He brought a singular style, inspired by his heroes Jason Mraz and Jeff Buckley. He certainly has a shot at a great career if he picks the right songs and surrounds himself with the right people.

Alex was also the consensus choice to go home tonight, which I predicted as well. I’m having my best year ever for predictions: I’m 9 for 12.

He simply couldn’t stop the powerhouse (relatively speaking) followings of Jena Irene and Caleb Johnson.

Both are worthy finalists. Jena Irene brings a youthful esprit de corps, great chops and stage presence to the fore. Sure, she isn’t always easy to understand but she’s fun to watch. Plus, she can sing a variety of genres with aplomb.

Caleb is a bit more one note than Jena Irene but boy, what a note! He loves his classic 1970s/80s rock and personifies a young Meat Loaf. Is there much modern about the man? Not really. But given who votes nowadays, the fact he has a following is not surprising.

VISITORS

Two third-place winners return: Danny Gokey, third place from season 8, has been married and is about to have a second child. He has a new single out, too, and a new foundation Sophia’s Heart. Season 5′s third place finisher Elliott Yamin is working on his fourth album. Season 10 winner Scotty McCreery sings his latest single “Feelin’ It,” looking a little more filled out. The song’s verses are a little clunky but the chorus is catchy.

NEXT WEEK

Caleb will sing with KISS. Jena will join Paramore. And Alex joins his buddy Jason Mraz, a former mentor.

RATINGS

Good news for once in ratings. The 500th episode rebounded to 8.93 million viewers and a 2.1 18-49 rating. That’s the show’s second best performance since top 9. But “Survivor” (9.93 million viewers, 2.6 18-49 rating) still beat it. So did “Modern Family” (9.03 million, 3.2 18-49) and “Criminal Minds” (12.03 million, 2.7 18-49)

So the title of this blog article is "Who makes the finals on ‘American Idol’?"

So I'll take a stab at it.  Um.......Caleb and GinaJeanaGenaJena?   :)

Hmmm, Idol competition night Vs. X-Men... Idol -result night VS. party I'm sponsoring...

So....the Tuesday Idol is one hour long starting at 8pm.  The Voice is airing a recap of Monday's performances at 8pm and the actual Voice finale doesn't begin until 9pm.  Dancing With the Stars finale will run against both Idol and The Voice.  The ratings guys will be going nuts.

On Wed., Idol's big 2 hour finale will be in competition with Survivor's finale and Modern Family's finale.

Anyone else disturbed by the Michael Jackson hologram "performance"?  If I was a young actor I'd worry about my future in the business.

Good morning!

JLo appeared on "Kelly and Michael" this am dressed in a white bath towel. Of her allotted 17 minutes she spoke of her fellow judges then and and now, her kids, her new album, how to do the 'luya papi" elbow - and was careful not to waste a second  on any of the American Idol contestants.

Good Morning everyone.  Can't wait for the finale on Tuesday for the guest performances.  Should be interesting.

Morning!

I just want to remind everyone that the contestant performances are tomorrow(Tuesday) not Wednesday as usual.  Dumb move on Idol's part if you ask me.

Thanks for rundown, D.!

Wondr if JenaGena will join Lee Dewyze and Candice Glover on that no-show list

Here's a rundown of the number of times each contestant appears on the list(and let me be the first to say yes, I'm bored and I know that this list is nothing but busy work to keep me amused).

Kelly Clarkson: 18

Carrie Underwood: 20

Chris Daughtry: (proving that you don't have to win to be successful) 10

Fantasia and Jordin Sparks: 5

David Cook: 4

Scotty McCreery, Kris Allen, Adam Lambert, Jennifer Hudson, Clay Aiken, and Josh Gracin: 3

Ruben Studdard, Philip Phillips, Katharine McPhee, Bo Bice and Kellie Pickler: 2 (PhilX2 has added another one since this list was compiled)

Taylor Hicks, Elliot Yamin, David Archuletta, Kimberly Locke, Blake Lewis, Diana DeGarmo, Bucky Covington, and Mario Vasquez: 1

The season 2 and season 4 compilation albums: 1 ea.

You might take note that Lee Dewyze and Candice Glover are the only 2 winners not on the list.

In honor of Idol's 500th episode, Fred Bronson of Billboard Magazine has put together a terrific tribute including the Top 100 Idols' music on the Billboard Hot 100.  This list, along with some interesting stories, is a fun read.  Our girl Kelly appears on the list 18 times.  Carrie is a 20 time winner(although, because it's from the Hot 100 list and not the country charts, she ranks lower)

Just watched the video of Jessica M on K&M and she flat "tore it up".  With a full band it would have been out of this world.  Her voice came through loud and clear, unlike on AI.  Like Kelly and Michael said, "what the heck does America want, if not her?"  (I know, I know, the judges, especially JLo had a lot to do with it, with their "friendly persuasion")  Stand by what I said last week, she will go places whereas the last 3 will not. She will still be out there cutting CDs and touring, while the others will be "nameless".  Once she gets to Nashville, it's "Katy, bar the door", even if she is Americana music mostly.

Okay my dang link wouldn't provide the video but it was Jess's performance on Kelly and Michael's show which was awesome.  In any event at this point with the final 2 being Jena and Caleb I am going to root for Caleb because I think he actually needs this win the most. As I've stated before Jess and Alex are going to find success with their singing/songwriting/musician and artistry skills. Jena, too, being a young pop-type princess with an interesting and unique sound (though I am not a fan of it) and also being a musician will likely find her way after Idol with a win or not. Caleb, on the other hand, will likely not receive any big offers outside of Idol because being realistic there is no current market for his skills. He is basically a classic rock cover band singer and there are many just like him fronting and singing in cover bands all across the country. His only chance to market material will likely be via the guaranteed recording contract that Idol offers the winner.

Got an email that I can download JenaGena and Caleb's victory songs. But I want to hear Alex's song.

And for folks wondering why the show is ending Tuesday/Wednesday, it's because the broadcast "season' ends Wednesday and Fox wanted "Idol" ratings included. Nowadays, the whole concept of a broadcast season is archaic as a beeper and fax machine. Networks are now debuting shows all year around. It strikes me as a silly contrivance nowadays.

If insightful commentary is what they should want from a Jackson then they would bring in Tito or Jermaine.

So AI may move to Tuesday night?

I did some digging and I think I may have figured out why.  Perhaps they think they would do much better going up against rerun episodes of "Storage Wars" on A&E Network Tuesday night than they would going up against rerun episodes of "Duck Dynasty" on A&E Wednesday night...........    :)

So when Caleb and GinaJeanaGeenaJena sing on finals night will Randy offer his astounding insights about someone being "in it to win it"?

Deirdre- not related to "Idol" but...

Wasn't Sheldon just pitiful on "The Big Bang Theory" season finale? Just overwhelmed by all the changes in his world!  Wonder where he will travel to and how long he'll be gone?

(Of course he was pitiful in true Sheldon fashion!)

@MercedesS  Kind of a weird feeling came over me.  Not good..........not bad...........just weird.  However, I like the album.  It's a blend of originals and remixes of the originals.

@Woodpappy  Pretty sure all the guests will be performing on Wed.  Tuesday is just for the contestant's performances and voting.

Rodney, since you're 9 for 12 for the season, who's your favorite at this moment to win the thing?

wreckedpizza

@RodneyHo Thanks for the info, Rodney.  I was sure they were doing it just to piss me off!!

Should've known it was just a silly contrivance and not aimed at me in anyway. :-)

@MoSch

How about Jesse as a judge and offering comments:

"My conversation is a reclamation and declaration of your performance to the nation".......

@DoubleNaughtSpy The "season" ends on Wednesday, which is why they have been running "Idol' Tues/Wed the final week the past couple of years.

Sheldon.......Sheldon.......was that the dude who was sent home in week 3 of American Idol?  Yeah, he was pitiful.  :)

DeirdreC
DeirdreC

@wreckedpizza  When Penny walked behind him at the train station and kissed his cheek and he accepted it so easily plus Leonard's mother saying that Penny was ok because Sheldon said so....all of that makes it seem like Sheldon is changing too .....even though it takes him years to move an inch!

DeirdreC

@wreckedpizza  I felt so bad for him.  He has such an inability to see beyond himself yet is sometimes so insightful.  Love that show and all the characters.

@Taminator49  Like with many other trends isn't it possible that 80's rock type music can make a comeback?

I wanted the other link to show up because its just Jess and none of the judges but oh well..................

@DeirdreC @wreckedpizza  Very true. I was surprised he didn't pull away from Penny. There was a time he would have!

I'm sure Amy wishes he would move faster. Poor girl is FRUSTRATED.  Loved Sheldon's rant when she again suggested they live together. Classic Sheldon!

MercedesS

@wreckedpizza I come late to all good shows!  The first episode I watched of "Seinfeld" was the last one.  And I only watched it because of all the hullabaloo.  Entertainment Weekly had a special issue where each episode was recapped and graded.  Kept that mag around for years; ticked off each episode watched.  This was before recording devices: in Atlanta, "Seinfeld" reruns were on every night at 10.

@Idolfan @Taminator49  Jessica actually fits into the music genre, AMERICANA.  Having lived in Nashville for 13 yrs. I became acquainted with it there and that's where she would fit perfectly. They even have a yearly awards show, and there is some dang good music in that style. It's hard to "pigeon-hole" it, but if you mixed Southern Rock, country, and 50's rock, you somewhat get the idea. The "country" people in Nashville just don't accept it, so you know it's not "real country".  Austin TX probably has just as many of the artists there as Nashville does, and some of them can be seen on Austin City Limits on Sat. nights sometimes.  Jessica just fits right in that "groove" to me.

Idolfan
Idolfan

@Taminator49 @Idolfan  You're welcome and I agree with you with regards to Jessica. I really like her too, and I absolutely hate country so the fact she's even a little bit country shocks me somewhat.

Taminator49
Taminator49

@Idolfan @Taminator49  Actually that would be amazing if it were to happen. Not just the 80s but rock n roll in general from the late 60s to 90s. Yet I don't see it happening (at least not anytime soon) because there is just SO much great music from the classic rock era that cannot be replicated. It's simply hard to surpass and it's like been there, done that, seen that and heard that sort of thing. Yet I really liked Jess this season because she has a little bit of everything. She has a great voice. She is a musician. She writes really good material. She's not exactly country. Not totally rock and roll. Definitely not pop, but her sound is different, refreshing and has a modern edge to it, but still has strong remnants of the old school music from the classic rock/pop era. That is what made her stand out and made her different.

@MercedesS @wreckedpizza  I just started watching a couple of seasons ago. I quickly became hooked and now record & watch the 3-hour block each Sat. night on TBS plus the new episodes as they are broadcast.
