This is my 10th year blogging about “American Idol” going back to Carrie Underwood and Bo Bice.

It’s been quite a journey, as every reality show calls it.

By the time I started doing episodic recaps in 2005, the show was a phenomenon, the biggest thing on TV. It kept growing into season five, its apex. The show then began a gradual decline but remained the “big” show even after Simon and Paula left.

As recently as season 10, the show as bringing in 20 million viewers a week and the season finale drew nearly 30 million.

Since then, it’s gotten ugly. “The Voice” stole its thunder. “The X Factor” was an annoying diversion. Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey made millions uncomfortable. People got bored or disenchanted.  Ratings fell off the cliff, especially the past two seasons. New producers and Harry Connick Jr. couldn’t redeem the 13th season.

Now, “Idol” is virtually off the pop culture radar screen. When Caleb this year made that “retard” comment, nobody paid any attention. It’s now just … another show, a show that gets beaten by “Big Bang Theory” repeats and even older shows such as “CSI” and “Survivor.”  It’s time in the zeitgeist is over. (Leave that to “Scandal,” “House of Cards,” and “Game of Thrones.”)

But for you regular readers and for me, “Idol” will always be special. I covered the show from its very first day in June, 2002 and it helped me stay employed even as the print journalism world has gone through major changes.

Though my separate “Idol” blog died in the fall of 2011, I kept writing about it here.  I made a decision to stick with the show (like Ryan Seacrest, minus the millions of dollars) until the bitter end.

So while this has been a dispiriting year in terms of popularity, I truly enjoyed season 13. It helped me forget the godawful season 12.

I think most of the regulars here stuck around because they enjoyed the show, too. While this commenting system is wonky, it is far better than the one we had before. The talent was good (if not the best ever). The judges panel, in my opinion, is better than the original three. The new producers made mostly smart changes. I’m sorry many viewers did not agree.

And next year, “Idol” will no longer have a results show and probably will only have a top 10 instead of top 13. (No loss there in many ways.)

Now it’s time to get to the huzzahs. I apologize if I missed anybody. This is by no means a complete list. A few folks seem to have left the scene since last year but we had a bunch of new regulars to make up for them despite the show’s shrunken self.

First and foremost, Deirdre for much of my run here has been our de facto den mom. She sets the tone. I feel nothing but the deepest gratitude for her contributions here year in, year out.  Thanks to her, this blog has remained largely respectful, deals with trolls without turning nasty and cares for each other in ways I couldn’t ever have imagined. There have been deaths (Nana and Harriet, we still miss you!), illnesses and triumphs. We hope to see you all again for season 14!

JTesla is my rock, an incredibly supportive reader who is almost always the first one to comment about whatever I’ve written. You da man!

Mercedes S: You’ve had nothing but heartache with this blog from a technical standpoint yet you’re still here. Thank you. And your movie reviews are a nice way to fill in the slow days!

Sam-A1: Another regular who has stuck it out through the good, bad and the ugly, thanks!

Jenny11: Your contributions are welcome any time and I appreciate you being around since the beginning! (And thanks for defending Jena so intensely! I’m sorry I pinned the word “arrogance” so tightly on Jena. There was definitely not a consensus there.)

Rickster: Your wit is divine!

JenniferHopez: Always hilarious!

Pitchy: We’re just glad we hardly ever heard your name on the show this year!

G_: You have good taste and a sharp tongue!

TheREALWaryTraveller: I’m glad we were able to keep you entertained while you travel from hotel to hotel, “Up in the Air” style!

Highlander1: You have been with us almost as long as Deirdre, eh?

DoubleNaughtSpy: It was a pleasure to have you and your thoughtful entries again this year.

Jaszy: I am thrilled to see newcomers as active as you! Thank you!

KokoSnoot: You kept things loose and amusing.

DanJohn: Thanks so much for sticking around again and keeping the conversation lively.

Woodpappy: Another regular who has survived multiple blog platforms and the occasional troll!

Others who helped make this blog worthwhile:  SheilaE, MoSch, Negativo, GSUEagle, YogiBare (a conspiracy theorist is always good for a debate!), BigAintheBigA, Hazelnutbah, flat, Idolfan, AGirlNamedSue, Taminator49, ETK, Jnewlin (a latecomer but certainly welcome!), pjk4, GeoffCoe, Jubie, McCovey44 and even LisaJone34, no matter how negative you got.

And for those of you who read this just during the season, I will continue to provide at least one “Idol”-related entry on this blog per week. We have a 14th season to think about now.

I’m not planning to go away. I hope you won’t either!

Sometimes my office feels like a tour of Nam! Lots of infighting - mostly when we tell a salesman that their order had been done incorrectly and has to be redone - like a nursery school full of brats!

I want to be back at the beach. But, I also want desperately to go to "World of Harry Potter".

Good Morning Vietnam......Oh wait, that was another time and another movie.  Good morning ya'll.

Morning!

Groggy from a rough night with the 3 year old(his parents and sister are at a conference in Florida) He wasn't unhappy, he just couldn't go to sleep.  probably a bit nervous.

Sam, looking forward to Falling Skies.

JT, looking forward to the World Cup.  Not too happy with Klinsman leaving Donovan off the roster however.

Speaking of off season... World Cup begins June 12th

Good night to the "28 people listening" - c'mon in and join we few who stick around after the season ends.

Mercedes: This past off-season, it was often just you, Deirdre and me, with a very occasional peep in from another regular. But the 3 of us can entertain ourselves talking about movies, books and other tv shows anyway. And the (mis)adventures of our beloved 4 legged babies of course (a book could be written about Maggie alone!)

Hey Mercedes, did Michael or Kelly remember the winner's name when they introduced Caleb ???

MercedesS

Don't worry, Sam... we'll make do.

Watched Caleb on the morning show and thank goodness I recorded it.  He got 2 minutes to scream a song, and 2 minutes to talk.  He behaved himself.

Wood: congrats on joining the 'holiday crowd'. I could never have worked without holidays/vaca days, et al.

Hope everyone had a great long weekend.

I saw "X Men" - not as big a fan as Mercedes. I am one of those pesky movie-goers who usually likes the first film far better than any subsequent ones. The first "X.." movie, with the young girl not understanding who/what she is, running away and a chance meeting with "wolfman' who took her to the school - none of the subsequent ones have been nearly as good for me. Same for my beloved "Rocky", "Pirates of the Caribbean", so many others. The Harry Potter series is one of the very few exceptions for me.

Deirdre: When you peek in, I watched several of the last season "FAlling Skies" on TNT yesterday, trying to prepare myself for the new season - now less than 2 weeks away. Have fun with the grandbabies.

Hope we'll have enough posters to keep this thing going for the next 7 months!

Good Morning All ! Hope everyone had a wonderful restful time off the past 3 days.  (Having had to work weekends, nights, and holidays for nearly all my adult life, it's now sooooo nice to be off like normal folks).

Morning!

The grandkids are visiting so my time on the blog will be severely limited for the next 10 days.  I will pop in when I can.

Good Morning - guess everybody is still having Memorial Day off. Guest on the Kelly and Michael show tomorrow - "the winner of American Idol".  Announcer Michael didn't bother about winner's name.

Home alone yesterday so I took time to watch some old recordings... "Fargo" is hysterically funny and weird. Anytime an actor wears bangs his character is up to no good.

Wishing everyone a happy, safe and respectful Memorial Day.

Hey guys,

I meant to check in sooner. I read this yesterday but didn't get a chance to comment until now. Looks like Caleb has only registered a small fart in the wind of pop culture. But who knows, maybe with the right packaging and the Idol machine behind him, he can do something relevant.....

Well, I will miss the show, but more than that, I will miss the chance to come together with all of you to chat for a few hours a week. RoHo, I really appreciate you keeping this going so we can connect with other American Idol nerds! I used to be able to talk about it with EVERYONE, but not a lot of people watch and discuss it anymore.

I normally only really comment during the live shows of the season, but I always read Rodney's blog and read all the comments... and actually now that I think about it, have been for a long time, even years before I ever started commenting.

I'm going to make an attempt to actually start doing some commenting throughout the rest of the year.

I was reading through the comments here, and I remember KellyandCarrieFan.. what happened to her? She used to comment all the time here! I always remembered her because she loved Kelly like I love Kelly.

Maybe we should have an Idol Blog meet up for the next 'good' American Idol who comes to Atlanta for a show?? that might be fun! See y'all laterz

KokoSnoot… if you're reading late on this holiday Friday… I just saw you came back!  I'm glad.  And don't worry… you're completely entitled to your reaction, and we understand.  :-)  I had a similar reaction to something back early in the year, and I left too.  So no worries.

I too have been through personal whirlwinds over the past year, with family illnesses and deaths.  It's very easy to react strongly on here when you're already so overwhelmed.

And thanks for explaining your name!  I LOVE Keeshonds.  I have cats myself, but have known several friends' Keeshonds over the years.  They're awesome.  :-)

And I hope to catch up on comments soon... doesn't it figure, I had to be super busy this week, and didn't have much time to read or chat, but....

YAY!!!!  Caleb wins!  The first time since Carrie Underwood that my season-long fave has actually won.  (I loved Candice last year, but Angie was my #1 favorite.)

What a nice feeling.  Two seasons in a row, I haven't felt frustrated and upset when the winner's name was read!  In the immortal words of Sam Cooke, "It's been a long time coming..."

Now I'm glad that I went out on a limb the other day and predicted him to win.  At the time, I was afraid I was jinxing him.  I'm SO glad America recognized and rewarded his talent.  :-)

Jenny11
Jenny11

Hey, cool, I got a mention!  Thank you, Rodney!  :-)  (And on the Jena / arrogance discussion, I do hope you read my multiple apologies for making it sound like I was upset with you.  I wasn't, and I felt terrible for posting without stopping to think how it might be misunderstood. :-(  That particular discussion had hit a nerve for complete other reasons.)

Anyway... it should be US thanking YOU for keeping the blog going all these years!  Idol's had it tough lately, but like others, part of the reason I still watch is because I like chatting and reading what everyone here has to say!  Here's to another season or two.  :-)

Speaking of celebrity marriage, Nikki Reed is divorcing that Paul McDonald guy who was in the top 10 a few years ago and couldn't sing a lick!

Mercedes: Thnks for the review - AJC also liked it a lot - guess that's my weekend/holiday movie.

Y'all all have a great holiday and be safe. D - can't wait for the pool tale.

American Idol Auditions We Wish We'd Have Seen: Tiny Tim ("Tiptoe Through The Tulips")

Randy: "Dude - you are a dude, right? Normally I love me some falsetto.. but that?? Naw, dude."

Paula: "How did you get your hair so long and silky?"

Simon: "Did you inhale helium? That was one of the worst auditions I've ever seen."

Good Morning - the new X-Men movie, "Days of Future Years" is a must see! It has heart, wit, intelligence, and mind-bending special effects.  Old and young X-men (and women) met. Convoluted story, but it works.

@Woodpappy  Can't remember... but they called him "winner of American Idol" three times.

@DeirdreC

Good link.  Michael and Melinda are spot on with most of their observations.

This season wasn't the overall worst (last year was) but it will rank in most AI fan's bottom 3 or 4 IMO.

If the show doesn't get back to basics it will surely have a 1-more-season shelf life. The judges and producers are ruining the show, not the contestants.

JTesla
JTesla

Of course it starts mid way in, because that's where I was when I copied the link. Go ahead and start from the beginning.

@jeniferhopez jho, we would love it if you joined us during the off-season.  If you can only post in the evenings, go ahead, someone will always get back to you.

k&cf showed up a few times this season and was welcomed back with open arms.  She IS our resident historian after all(much as Sierra is our resident statistician, wherever she is) I'm not sure why she doesn't post as often anymore but she occasionally drops in.

As Idol's ratings are flagging, so is the interest of some of the bloggers.  Fortunately many of us are hardheaded enough to stick with it.  Your posts would be a welcome sight during the summer doldrums.

@MercedesS Sounds like the Schriebman family reunion without the heart, wit, and I will not mention the intelligence for fear of offending anyone not that they worry when it is vice versa now that I think of it. Did I mention intelligence?

@pjk4 @MercedesS  PS.  Billy Bob Thornton's character (the one with bangs) is too scary for words.  Can't watch this show after dark, not when I'm home alone.
