Vinnie Politan is leaving Atlanta-based HLN July 3 and joining the NBC affiliate 11 Alive as a morning anchor, I’ve learned exclusively.

WXIA-TV General Manager John Deushane confirmed the news to me but couldn’t provide any details.

11 Alive sent a memo to staff today saying he will join Karyn Greer in the mornings starting the first week of August, effectively replacing Ted Hall, who left last year to return to Knoxville.

Politan referred comments to HLN, which released a statement: “Vinnie has been a tremendous asset to HLN over the years.  We thank him and wish him only the best.”

He currently hosts “HLN Now” from 2 to 5 p.m. weekdays.  Other shows he has hosted for HLN in the past: “On The Case,” “After Dark,” and “Making it in America.”

Politan graduated Stanford University as an undergraduate and received his law degree at Seton Hall School of Law. He started an an assistant prosecutor in the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, then practiced as a private attorney before switching to journalism.

He worked as as reporter and anchor for Central Florida News 13 in Orlando in the early 2000s and covered the disputed 2000 presidential election during the “hanging chad” controversy. He joined Atlanta-based Court TV (now TruTV) in 2001 as a correspondent and host, then oversaw the TruTV’s court-based “In Session” programming, which went away last year. He split time between TruTV and HLN from 2009 until 20013. For a time, he also hosted a morning show on Sirius/XM radio.

Over the years, he has covered many of the highest-profile court cases including trials of Robert Blake,  Lindsay Lohan, Casey Anthony,  Jodi Arias and George Zimmerman.

HLN itself has changed management over the past year and rebranded itself as the “social media” network.

His departure signifies a continued move away from court-focused coverage, which tends  to be feast or famine.

Last week, there were rumors that HLN might be merged with the edgy journalistic venture Vice.

Here is a sample of Politan’s work on HLN:

And here’s a touching tribute to his late father:

Rafael Storm is panting for a brain transplant. The jury effed up on Casey Anthony--just like you botched Politan's surname [your insidious & invidious slam isn't funny]. After you read a book, perhaps some1 might listen to you. Until then, no1 cares about reckless opinions of h.s. dropouts. You couldn't define "fascist" & your room-temperature I.Q. hasn't a clue what a journalist is. You're insufferable & obviously lonely since you've typed [notice I didn't say "write"] 5 name-calling earfuls of dung. You must prefer morbidly obese to "hot" which announces to all that you're obese & like to fart out odious phrases 'cuz you can't get a date. Experienced broadcasters~~not punks~~is what news-watchers insist on.  [Not a very good word to end a sentence on! Clearly Rafael hasn't earned any thoughtful replies. As usual, he's ignored by educated folks.]

Crooke’s excessively lucky to lasso Vinnie Politan. He’s sole HLN anchor/reporter who doesn’t editorialize. Viewers don’t give a hoot about stranger online opinions; we want the news to make our own judgment. If Crooke wants to pollute ch11’s news with alien/uneducated "feelings," viewers will escape to ch 2. She noted her interest in tarnishing our news in her Aug 2013 speech. Perhaps Vinnie can transplant some NE class to the south. No1 cares if Crooke has 2 teens (not unique) or what food an anchor or viewer is afraid of. In PISA, U.S. failed to crack the global top-20 in reading, math & science proficiency. Don’t contribute to that Crooke. HLN was becoming squalid & worthless [w/despicable & mean Nancy gloating]; little wonder Vinnie fled.

Thank goodness that Vinnie Napolitano's debris field will be narrowed to Atlanta, instead of the entire nation. The mini-bio above doesn't mention that his work as an attorney in the private sector was handling slip-and-falls for a national supermarket chain. Who can forget his open-mic faux pax regarding Casey Anthony's breasts during her trial? Atlanta, prepare yourself for the worst damned Yankee since Sherman!

I went to college with Vinnie and even did radio shows with him at KZSU.  A prince of a guy and a real talent. I I wish him only the best. He's worked hard for over 25 years and deserves his success.

I LOVE VInnie. Not only is he hot, but he is an excellent journalist. I think he'll fit in nicely. Welcome, Vinnie.

Wow, Chesley and Vinnie? LOVE that. A great way to wake up!!

Demarco will go back to evenings? That's good. (By the way...I really think Demarco and Blayne Alexander need to be kickin' it; they seem they'd make a good couple...to marriage. Anyway...)

I will miss the best split-screen ever: Vinnie Politan and Mike Galanos together. Yum, Yum, Yum!!!!!!!!

If Jeff Zucker had his way, all CNN Atlanta personnel would leave.

@BasilKarampelas The Prince of Darkness, with his fascist mentality. Was his name still Napolitano when you were in college with him?

@Wisdom2014 Oh, yeah, "hot" is a really good credential for a broadcast journalist. What about intelligence and impartiality? He has neither.

Worry not, Wayne!  Jeffie is going to MOVE ALL OF CNN TO NEW YORK!  It's not a matter of "if" only "when."  The "Headquarters" joke is a well-known fact ...it's in NEW York, not Atlanta.

Depending on the 2014 election cycle outcome, the total move for all CNN but a scattered few, will take place by YE or summer of '15.  Jeffie considers Atlanta (and other cities in the "flyover territory") backward, ignorant and hick-infested.

Anyone working for CNN had best not make plans on being in Atlanta after 12/31/2015. Personally, it won't affect me or my family as we don't watch CNN.
