‘American Idol’ briefs: Clay Aiken, Danny Gokey, New Orleans auditions

Clay Aiken campaigned in San Francisco to raise money for his underdog effort to become a House representative in a Republican-favored district in North Carolina. He is facing off against an incumbent Renee Ellmers.

According to the San Francisco Gate,  “Aiken’s speech to the crowd at Catch lasted 15 minutes without missing a beat on education, interest-free student loans, veterans support, his pre-Idol past working with disabled children, and why he’s seeking a seat in Congress now. Clay Aiken made articulate, well-rounded points. I don’t mean to sound shocked, but this is the guy who got beat by Arsenio Hall on the Celebrity Apprentice.”

The season 14 judges on “Idol” are now in New Orleans.

I appreciate the honesty of hometown boy Harry Connick Jr. He said day one of auditions was just “okay” and hoped for more day two.

Chart update:

Right now, “Idol” alums are doing especially well on the Christian pop chart.

The second “American Idol’ contestant to hit No. 1 on the Christian chart is Danny Gokey (after Mandisa last year with “Stronger”). Gokey’s song “Hope in Front of Me” is his first Christian single and it’s a huge hit. Congratulations Danny!

Speaking of Mandisa, her latest “Back to You” is at No. 11 while Colton Dixon’s “More of You” as at No. 17.

Country chart: “Somethin’ Bad” with Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood is at No. 13 on the Mediabase chart with upward momentum.

“Feelin’ It” Scotty McCreery is stuck at No. 28.

Hot AC: “Battleships” Daughtry is at No. 29, with modest upward movement.  Phillip Phillips’ new song “Unpack Your Heart” is at No. 43 with his latest new single.

Urban AC: “It’s Your World” Jennifer Hudson at No. 19

I tried all weekend to break my "death grip" on this blog but I just can't especially when there is such happy news to report:

River Rose(Kelly's beautiful baby girl) will have a playmate soon when Carrie Underwood gives birth to her baby!!!!

Congrats to Carrie and Mike!

I just see the ice bucket challenge as a criminal waste of water.

Surely there's another way to draw attention to a cause.

Thanks for the new thread, Rodney, and the Labor Day wishes.

Tired of the "Ice Bucket Challenge."  Glad it's raised a lot of money for a horrible disease.

Have a great weekend folks. When we all reconvene, I'll be a year older. (Birthday Sunday.)

I've just about 'labored' my butt off today - this end of month crap is for the loonies in the bin! And it'll put me and my dept co-workers there pretty soon!

So, not knowing how the last hour may go, I hope you all have a safe and fun long weekend!

Nobody else here today?  All gone on vacation?

Have just about given up on Entertainment Weekly, which has turned from sophisticated magazine about current entertainment news to pablum for fanboys  (more pictures than words,  endless enumerations, ("Ten best" lists), and rewrites from PR-agencies)  BUT this weekend the mag has a ten page long cover story on the new season of The Walking Dead. Theme: the lead actors are asked how they'd like to die on the show.

Just wondering ... where did August go?

Good morning ladies.  (typed slowly).

Goodmorning!  Today is type your letters slowly, one at a time-day.

The "shuffle" thing below is soooo weird - the posts will not go to "newest" or "oldest", but just keep being mixed up - one from 22 hours ago, then one from 25 hours ago, then one from 21 hours ago. Only the very newest or oldest one is on top when you shuffle whichever way - it's like a tossed salad. Never had that particular problem before!

Morning!

I wonder if this is the Claymates' first foray into politics. I'm reading a lot of buzz words(Big Business, Koch Bros) but no real understanding of the process.  A smart voter always looks beyond the sound bites created by both affiliations.  A smart campaigner doesn't assume that because we are American Idol fans on a blog we are stupid.

Thanks Rodney, for new thread.

Not to sound political, but shouldn't he be campaigning in the district he wants to represent, and not in Pelosi's backyard?

@MercedesS I just finished reading the whole WD story.  Really enjoyed it!

@Sam-A1 Weird!  Not happening on my end but I never touch the "newest/oldest" thingy.

@DeirdreC The Koch brothers bogeyman, as silly as the Soros bogeyman.

@Hank_Hill He was not campaigning but attending a fundraiser friends had set up for him. Happens all the time - not all campaign funds come from within one's district.

In fact his GOP opponent  - the incumbent who has lived in NC for a short period of time - is getting most of her money from BIG BUSINESS.  Clay has been a life-long NC resident.

JTesla
JTesla

@Hank_Hill I agree, but it is the nature of the beast. Out of state money floods into campaigns for candidates or initiatives. Rather sickening from my perspective.

DeirdreC
DeirdreC

@Hank_Hill I agree but that seems to be the way politics works now.  Every other state tries to interfere with how your particular state votes.

@JTesla @DeirdreC Now look who's ignorant of reality. To pooh pooh the Koch brothers you have to be either a Republican or ignorant. Not that there's any difference.

JTesla
JTesla

@georgiabelltaylor Doesn't matter. It may be legal, but national or international funds flowing into a campaign limits the influence of the people who are being represented. It works to undermine our federalist system of government.

DeirdreC
DeirdreC

@georgiabelltaylor ooooooh   and BIG BUSINESS is EVIL!!!!!  We all know that!!!

Truth is Republicans and Democrats all get their money from the same rich folk who want the same special favors in return for the money.  It's a racket!

A pox on both their houses!

JTesla
JTesla

@SmartiPantz Soros throws more money around (on a personal level) than the Koch brothers. I'm not a fan of either, but to ignore one while bashing the other is the height of ignorance.

Sorry that facts don't support your rant.

DeirdreC

@SmartiPantz @JTesla @DeirdreC Someday, I hope soon, we will all start to realize the incredible amount of manipulation that goes on by politicians with the help of the media.  Both political parties have created a society of hate because it furthers each politician's individual cause...which is getting elected...or getting someone else elected.

The number of people who fall for all this crap(evidenced by the  mindless rudeness of SmartiPantz)is mind boggling!

When did we stop thinking for ourselves?  When did we become brainwashed into repeating platitudes, sound bites and half truths manufactured by people who do not have our best interests at heart?  When will we read the Constitution and understand that day by day, month by month, year by year, EVERYTHING that this document promised is being eaten away by greedy men and women who have no thoughts other than for themselves.

SmartiPantz
SmartiPantz

@JTesla @georgiabelltaylor That's why Clay's money comes from individuals while the vast majority of his opponent's comes from GOP Super Pacs.

Some articles criticize him because she has more money but they don't give him credit for his ability to inspire actual people to support him.

The fundraisers limit individual contributions to a ceiling of $5,200 per election cycle.

I'd like to see some Democratic Super Pac throw him a few million.

SmartiPantz
SmartiPantz

@JTesla Are you being general or specific? Clay is not a recipient of Soros money so I'm not sure what your point is.

SmartiPantz
SmartiPantz

When will you stop being so rude as to treat anyone with a positive opinion of Clay Aiken as if they must all be Claymates and treat them as if they were some kind of undeserving second class?

DeirdreC
DeirdreC

@SmartiPantz  "his ability to inspire actual people to support him"  So his opponent doesn't have "actual people" supporting her?  How on earth will she get any votes then?

JTesla
JTesla

@SmartiPantz Have a link which lists both candidates donors?

DeirdreC
DeirdreC

@SmartiPantz I happen to be a big fan of Mr Aiken.  However, Rodney prints a story about Clay Aiken and we can always count on one or two Claymates(maybe you would prefer the term "fan") to show up.

You keep making statements about his opponent that also seem to be true of Mr Aiken.  Politicians from both parties fund-raise, often in places that have nothing to do with their constituency, and often with very rich people who want to have some control over an election.

It is laughable to assume that it is ok for your favored politician but not ok for his/her opponent .  What do you think Clay was doing in San Francisco?  He was soliciting money for his campaign from people who he will not represent.  He WILL have Democrat Super Pacs and special interest groups back him whether he wants them to or not.  It is the nature of the beast.

SmartiPantz
SmartiPantz

@DeirdreC Good question. She has some actual individual contributors but not many. Her money comes from the Koch brothers Super Pac and a few other special interest lobby groups who don't vote in that district.

SmartiPantz
SmartiPantz

@DeirdreC But it is not the same at all.  The SF people are friends who want to contribute to his campaign and promote him to their friends. None of them can contribute more than a cap of $2,600 for the general election.

$2,600 vs a million, or more, are faaaaaaar apart, wouldn't you say?

Maybe you should read the FEC reports to get an accurate picture before you carry on?  Maybe you could also let go of the death grip you have on this blog and make it more hospitable to new people without shoving them into boxes.

DeirdreC
DeirdreC

@SmartiPantz hmmmm.  A little like Clay getting money in San Francisco.  I'm pretty sure they don't vote in his district either.  And if the Dems want Clay to win, I'm pretty sure there will be Super Pacs supporting him.  You understand that they are ALL special interest groups, right?

JTesla
JTesla

@SmartiPantz What is your point again and how does it address my point that the right always cries about "Soros" and the left always cries about "Koch Brothers"?

DeirdreC
DeirdreC

@SmartiPantz @DeirdreC If Rodney was unhappy with my behavior on the blog he would have said something a long time ago.  Forgive me for not being welcoming to some who suggests people who disagree with her/him are ignorant.

I've always thought Claymates were proud of that name.  Apparently not.

This article pretty much agrees with your point about Clay getting money from individuals although it does point out that most of the money raised by his opponent arrived in her coffers the year before Clay announced his intention to run.  He is currently outpacing her in donations.  Therefore I wouldn't say the Super Pacs are behind her in any big way other than to support an incumbent.  Her donations seem to have a lot more to do with her being a politician rather than someone new to the battle like Clay.

@DeirdreC said "Rodney prints a story about Clay Aiken and we can always count on one or two Claymates(maybe you would prefer the term "fan") to show up."

That's the plan and how Rodney wants it to go. Blogs are all about getting the hits. Why would you want to be so possessive and jealous of this space to drive away anyone?
