Legendary Christian singer Steven Curtis Chapman, Britt Nicole and Tenth Avenue North are among the headliners at the biggest free concert in metro Atlanta, courtesy of Fish 104.7. Dubbed Celebrate Freedom, the annual Saturday Labor Day weekend event is held at Jim R. Miller Park in Marietta.
Sure, it’s one of the busiest weekends of the year in metro Atlanta for events but this one is not in downtown Atlanta, at least, where Dragon*Con and college football fans intermingle every Labor Day weekend.
The Celebrate Freedom annual shindig typically draws 50,000 plus people, bigger than most any Braves game. (The Braves on Sunday are featuring a Newsboys concert on Sunday.) Last year’s concert featured Switchfoot and Third Day, which drew around 60,000.
Fish 104.7 does not make money on the event, attempting to bridge the costs via sponsorships by the likes of title sponsor law offices Gary Martin Hays and ticket distributors Ingles, J. Christopher’s and the Atlanta Hawks. You can’t just show up, though. You can download free tickets here.
You can’t bring food and drink on the premises but they’ll be vendors there. Parking is $5. Chairs, blankets and towels are acceptable to bring.
The event runs from 10:45 a.m. to 11 p.m. The schedule is here. There will be an opening band competition at 10:45 a.m. and the winner will play around 6:30 p.m.
Chapman is one of the most successful Christian artists in history with more than 45 No. 1 hits on the Christian charts spanning a quarter century. He is up at 6:45 p.m.
Britt Nicole, who comes on at 8:15 p.m., has three top 10 Christian hits including “You” and “All This Time.” She is followed by Ellie Holcomb at 9;15 p.m., a relatively new Nashville-based singer songwriter. The day-long affair closes with the Florida band Tenth Avenue North at 10 p.m. who had nine consecutive top 10 Christian hits from 2008 to 2013.
9:30 a.m.-11 p.m. Aug. 30. Free, but tickets are required but can be downloaded here. Jim R. Miller Park, 2245 Callaway Road S.W., Marietta. 770-528-8875.
