AMC has greenlit an eighth season of “The Walking Dead” even before the seventh season returns.

The show is guaranteed 100 episodes, which will happen sometime during season eight.

This is hardly a big risk on AMC’s part. The apocalyptic zombie drama has been the most popular program among 18 to 49 year olds the past four seasons. Viewership peaked season five and slipped a bit last year but remains a phenomenon.

The network has been giving “The Walking Dead” 16 episodes a season, split into two.

Season seven returns Sunday, October 23 at 9 p.m. followed by a 90-minute “Talking Dead” featuring Jeffery Dean Morgan and all 11 cast members who were threatened by his character Negan during the season six cliffhanger.

The show is shot in and around Senoia but is now fictionally set in Virginia.
